Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Acts 3:1-2 tells of Peter and John going to the temple at the time of prayer -- three in the afternoon -- when they saw a crippled man being carried to the temple gate to beg for money. For how long had he been crippled?

Answer: Over 40 years

It states in Acts 3:2 that the man was paralyzed from birth, although no further details are given in the chapter. However, Acts 4:22 states the crippled beggar was more than 40 years old. This is the first documented account of a specific miracle performed by the disciples in Acts, a chapter which documents the growth of the early church after the resurrection and ascension of Jesus.

However, Acts 2:43 states "many wonders and miraculous signs were done by the apostles", but no further information is given.
2. According to Acts 3:3, how did the crippled beggar react when he saw Peter and John about to enter the temple?

Answer: He asked them for money.

The crippled beggar had only one thought on his mind when he saw Peter and John: he wanted money. Verse 3 states the man asked the two disciples for money and they responded by looking "straight at him" and asked the man to look at them. Verse 5 goes on to state: "So the man gave them his attention, expecting to get something from them." The beggar, however, would receive something much more valuable than money.

He would soon be able to walk for the first time in his life.
3. In Acts 3:6, in the NIV Bible, Peter declared to the crippled beggar "silver or gold I do not have, but what I have I give you." Then what did Peter say to the man?

Answer: "In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, walk."

The correct answer is "in the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, walk." As is the case with practically all the miracles performed by the disciples and Paul in the Acts, few words were spoken. In other words, the miracles were preceded by a sharp command invoking the name of Jesus.

Incidentally, an old joke goes like this: "Where do you find the church's first financial statement?" Answer: "Acts 3:6 -- Silver and gold I do not have."
4. After Peter responded to the man's request for money, what happened, as per Acts 3:7-8?

Answer: He was suddenly able to walk.

After Peter made his statement to the man, a miracle happened. Act 3: 7-8, in the NIV Bible, describes things this way: "Taking him by the right hand, he helped him up, and instantly the man's feet and ankles became strong. He jumped to his feet and began to walk." The man was obviously ecstatic because verse 8 states he went into the temple courts with Peter and John and he was "walking and jumping and praising God." It must have been a wonderful sight to behold.
5. According to Acts 3:9-10, what was the reaction of the people after the encounter between Peter and John and the crippled beggar?

Answer: They were filled with wonder and amazement.

Make no mistake about it. The people were filled with awe. After all, the man they had seen crippled for more than 40 years was now "walking and jumping and praising God." Verse 10 states they were filled with "wonder and amazement" at what had happened to him.

The miracle gave Peter and John a perfect opportunity to address a large crowd and preach to them the message of a resurrected Jesus Christ.
6. Acts 3:11 tells of the beggar hanging on to Peter and John and all the people running to them at a particular place at the temple court. What's the name of the the place?

Answer: Solomon's Colonnade.

The correct answer is Solomon's Colonnade. According to notes in the NIV Study Bible, Solomon's Colonnade was part of the temple court in Jerusalem. It was "a porch along the inner side of the wall enclosing the outer court, with rows of 27-foot high stone columns and a roof of cedar." According to Wikipedia, the area of Solomon's Colonnade is now occupied by Al Aqsa Mosque.
7. When the crowd demanded an answer of Peter as to how the beggar was healed, what did he say, as per Acts 3:16?

Answer: By faith in the name of Jesus, this man whom you see and know was made strong.

Acts 3:16, in the NIV Bible, states: "By faith in the name of Jesus, this man whom you see and know was made strong. It is Jesus' name and the faith that comes through him that has given this complete healing to him, as you can all see." In all the miracles performed by Peter and Paul in Acts, all the glory is given to Jesus. Similar to the miracles performed by Jesus in the four Gospels, faith often plays a key role in people being healed in Acts.
8. Complete the missing words from Acts 3:17-18, in the NIV Bible: "Now, brothers, I know that you acted in ignorance, as did your leaders. But this is how God fulfilled what he had foretold through all the _________, saying that his Christ would suffer."

Answer: prophets

The correct answer is prophets. A common tenet of Christianity is the birth of Jesus was foretold by various prophets in the Old Testament. Jesus himself made similar statements. For example, after he appeared to Cleopas and his friend on the road to Emmaus, Jesus states the prophets had foretold of his arrival. Luke 24:27, in the NIV Bible, states: "And beginning with Moses and all the prophets, he explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself."
9. In Acts 3:19, Peter told the people to repent and turn to God. When this happened, what did Peter say would happen?

Answer: Their sins would be wiped out and times of refreshing would come from the Lord.

Their sins would be wiped out and times of refreshing would come from the Lord, is the correct answer. Repentance is a common theme in both the Old Testament and the New Testament. And when there is repentance with people turning to God, Peter was saying, sins are forgiven.
10. In Acts 3:22, Peter stated "for Moses said, 'The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among your own people; you must listen to everything he tells you'." What did Peter say would happen if they did not listen to such a prophet?

Answer: They would be cut completely off from among his people.

They would be cut completely off from among his people, is the correct answer. Verse 24 goes on to state: "Indeed, all the prophets from Samuel on, as many as have spoken, have foretold these days." As stated in the answer to Question 8, many Christians believe the birth of Jesus was foretold by various prophets in the Old Testament.
