Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Job 1 states that the sons of God (angels) came before the LORD. Satan, the fallen or evil angel, appeared too. When God asked him, where did Satan say he came from?

Answer: Earth

It seems that angels are called "sons of God" because they, unlike human beings, don't have biological parents. God created the angels, however many, directly, without the aid of mothers or fathers. Therefore, they can't be called anyone's sons except for God's. Angels also don't normally marry anyone or reproduce, although Genesis 6 might include an exception to this. According to Genesis 6, "the sons of God" married human women and had offspring with them.

Many Christians believe that all angels are males. There are only three named angels in the Bible: Michael, Gabriel, and Lucifer, who became Satan. These are masculine names. In addition, the angels whom God sent to Sodom and Gammorah looked exactly like human men (Genesis 19:5). The men who lived there thought the angels were human males. Most (if not all) other angels of the Bible are described as masculine too, but I do wonder if Isaiah 34:15 could refer to a female fallen angel or demon.

Job 1:7 states that Satan said he came from Earth or the earth. According to popular culture or depictions of the devil, Satan lives in the Lake of Fire, also known as Hell. However, this is a misconception! According to the Bible, Satan currently lives in the earth (Revelation 12:9; 2 Corinthians 4:4) and he won't be put into the Lake of Fire until Christ's second coming (Revelation 20:10)!
2. Exodus 4:23, in the New American Standard Bible, says, "So I said to you, 'Let My son go that he may serve Me'; but you have refused to let him go. Behold, I will kill your son, your firstborn.'" Who or what did God call His son here, and, through Moses, who did He plan to talk to?

Answer: Israel and the pharaoh

Not only did God call Israel His son in Exodus 4, but He also called the nation His firstborn son. This was figurative language to show how important Israel was to God. Elsewhere in the Old Testament, God called Israel His wife. A wife is very different from a son, obviously, but both are simply metaphors to portray God's love for Israel. "Israel" refers to the Hebrew people, both men and women, the descendants of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

According to Exodus 5, the pharaoh said that he didn't know Israel's God and he refused to let them go.
3. Deuteronomy 14:1, in the New American Standard Bible states, "You are the sons of the Lord your God; you shall not cut yourselves nor shave your __ for the sake of the dead." What were the Israelites told not to shave here? The answer might surprise you.

Answer: Their foreheads

Does anybody actually have hair on their foreheads? The King James Bible says to not make "baldness between the eyes", the New American Standard Bible says "forehead", while the New Living Translation states "above your foreheads". I also read some commentaries. It appears that, rather than the verse meaning that they shouldn't shave hair on their actual foreheads, it more accurately means that they either not shave their eyebrows, or the hair on their heads.

It is clear that they weren't supposed to do it for the dead. Apparently, the pagans often shaved their hair for religious or occult reasons. The Hebrew God wanted His people to be different or separate.
4. Psalms 82:6 has caused controversy (then again, what Bible verse hasn't?). In addition to calling judges or rulers sons of the Most High God, what else does Psalms 82:6 call them in the New American Standard Bible?

Answer: Gods

Psalms 82:6-7, New American Standard Bible:
"I said, 'You are gods, And all of you are sons of the Most High.
Nevertheless you will die like men And fall like any one of the princes.'"

This verse has caused controversy because some people think it suggests that men are, or can be, gods. However, the fact that these judges and rulers would die like men suggests that they ARE men, not really gods. Jesus, whom Christians believe was God in the flesh, did die--but He also rose from the dead and ascended into Heaven. Such a fate isn't given to these men in Psalms 82:6-7. According to traditional Judeo-Christian beliefs, there is only one true God. Any other gods are false.

These rulers were given the titles of "gods" and "sons of God" because they were very powerful and they were SUPPOSED to represent God's authority on Earth. But actually, Asaph, the writer of this specific Psalm, rebuked them for acting wickedly or ungodly.
5. According to 1 Chronicles 28:6-7, God told Jesse, David's father, that David was like a son to God, and that He would establish David's kingdom forever.

Answer: False

This is false. 1 Chronicles 28:6-7 state that God was talking to David about David's son, Solomon. God told David that Solomon would build His Temple for Him. Interestingly, on top of that, God said that Solomon was like a son to Him, and that He would be a father to Solomon. The LORD (or Lord) also said that IF Solomon always obeyed God, then He would establish Solomon's kingdom forever. Sadly, we know from 1 Kings 11 that Solomon became idolatrous and turned his back on God in his elder years.

In a way, God did establish Solomon's kingdom forever, because, at least according to Mathew 1, Christ descended from Solomon.
6. Psalms 2:11-12 state, in the New American Standard Bible: "Worship the Lord with reverence And rejoice with trembling. Do homage to the Son, that He not become angry, and you perish in the way, For His wrath may soon be kindled. How blessed are all who take refuge in Him!" Christians believe that these verses are about Jesus. Based on the New Testament, which of these options is NOT a title for Jesus?

Answer: The Dove

The New Testament never calls Jesus "The Dove". Jesus never used this title for Himself either. Jesus called Himself the Light of the World in John 9:5. The New Testament frequently calls Jesus a lamb and/or the Lamb. Revelation 5:5 calls Him the Lion of Judah.

The dove has been a symbol for the Holy Spirit, because of Luke 3:22 and similar verses. At Christ's baptism, the Holy Spirit took the form of a dove and descended upon Christ.

When Jesus discussed His Father and the Holy Spirit, He normally talked about them as if they were different from Jesus, and even as if the Father was different from the Holy Spirit. Take, for example, John 14:26.

John 14:26, New American Standard Bible:
"But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said to you."

But then Jesus also claimed that He and the Father were one (John 10:30). All of this has led to the Christian doctrine of the Trinity, the idea that one God exists as three different "persons".
7. Proverbs 30:4 is another Old Testament verse that Christians believe refers to Jesus. It states, "Who has ascended into heaven and descended? Who has gathered the wind in His fists? Who has wrapped the waters in His garment? Who has established all the ends of the earth? What is His name or His son's name? Surely you know!" (New American Standard Bible). The writer of this was Solomon, who said that he was the stupidest man on Earth.

Answer: False

While Solomon wrote some of the Proverbs, this one was written by Agur, the son of a man named Jakeh. Agur states that he is the stupidest man on Earth, that he has no wisdom or even knowledge of God. This is a sharp contrast from Solomon, who asked for wisdom from God.

I personally sense a little irony from Agur. He seeks for more or deeper knowledge of God, which is understandable, but he says he has no knowledge of the Holy One. For him to write the things he does throughout Proverbs 30, Agur must have some knowledge of God.
8. According to Matthew 1:20-21, an angel appeared to Joseph in a dream and told him not to worry about marrying Mary because her baby was the Son of God. The angel then told Joseph to name the child Jesus. What do these verses imply the name Jesus means?

Answer: Salvation

The name Jesus means "Yahweh (God) is salvation". Matthew 1:21 implies that it means this because he told Joseph that the holy child would save people from their sins. "Jesus" is actually the English version of the Hebrew/Aramaic name "Yeshua".

The New Testament states that Mary was a virgin when she became pregnant with Jesus. She was betrothed to Joseph. The angel told Joseph to not worry about Mary because her child wasn't conceived the natural way; He was of the Holy Spirit.

According to traditional Christianity, God isn't exactly the biological father of Jesus. Jesus didn't have any biological father. According to John 1, Jesus always existed as the Word of God. Christians debate whether the Word of God was always called the Son of God, or if He only became the Son at some point. It seems that, based on Luke 1:35, both the Father and the Holy Spirit placed or formed Jesus in Mary's womb, but Jesus always referred to the Father, not the Holy Spirit, as His Father.
9. Luke 3 includes a genealogy. Who is called the son of God?

Answer: Adam

There are probably two reasons why Adam is called the son of God. According to the Bible, Adam was the first human being created. Adam didn't have a human mother or father; God simply created him. In this way, he was similar to the angels. The other reason why Luke 3 calls Adam the son of God is probably because, well, it is Jesus Christ's genealogy. By pointing out that Adam was the son of God, and then saying that Jesus was a son of Adam, Luke connects Jesus as the Son of God.

There are several differences between the genalogies of Matthew and Luke. Some Christians therefore believe that Matthew traces Christ's ancestry from His adoptive father, Joseph, while Luke actually traces it through His mother, Mary.
10. In his song "Speechless", Christian singer/songwriter Steven Curtis Chapman includes the lyrics, "Oh how great is the love the Father has lavished upon us, That we should be called the sons and daughters of God!" Chapman paraphrased a Bible verse. Which one?

Answer: 1 John 3:1

The exact wording of 1 John 3:1 varies between translations, but the overall message is the same. This is how the New American Standard Bible says it:

1 John 3:1
"See how great a love the Father has bestowed on us, that we would be called children of God; and such we are. For this reason the world does not know us, because it did not know Him."

It's interesting to note that in the King James, the phrase "the sons of God" is used, which might give some readers a false impression that it excludes Christian women. The vast majority of other translations use the gender-neutral "children of God".

The Old Testament calls Israelites the sons or children of God. Christians, including Gentiles, believe that they become children of God by taking part in the New Covenant and believing in the Father's Son, Jesus.

According to Wikipedia, Steven Curtis Chapman co-wrote "Speechless" with Geoff Moore.
