1. When was the Southern Baptist Convention organized?

Answer: 1845

It was established to help concentrate mission efforts and cooperation among Baptists in the southern part of the U.S. The Baptists sent out missionaries from their headquarters in Philadelphia, but did not want to send people associated with slavery.
2. The first meeting of the Southern Baptists was held in which of these cities?

Answer: Augusta, Georgia

The current headquarters is in Richmond, Virginia. It is also the headquarters of the International Mission Board, but it all started in Augusta.
3. The first Southern Baptist Seminary was established in which U.S. city?

Answer: Greenville, South Carolina

It started in 1859, closed due to the Civil War and then reopened in Louisville in 1877. The undergraduate school, Boyce College, is named after one of the first professors. Currently, the Southern Baptists have seminaries in Louisville, Ft. Worth, Texas, New Orleans, San Francisco, Kansas City and Wake Forest, North Carolina.

Lottie (1840-1912) was a missionary to China who sacrificed everything for the people there. When she left in 1912, she weighed only fifty pounds. She died before reaching home. Taylor was a British missionary to China, Armstrong is known for her work in America, and the state of Arkansas names their local missions offering after Dixie Jackson.

Annie was the first Executive Secretary of the Women's Missionary Union. The WMU supports missionaries in sevedral different ways. She wrote thousands of letters raising support for missionaries around the world.

Answer: Going completely underwater

The Greek translation of 'Baptizo' means 'immerse'. For Baptists, this means to go completely underwater. This difference is what started the separation of Baptists from other denominations. Baptists also believe that baptism is only for one who has believed in the salvation of Jesus and accepted it.
7. Whose reforms and teachings are credited with leading to the creation of what is considered the first Baptist church?

Answer: John Smyth

Although the other three contributed significantly to Baptist doctrine, it was Smyth, in 1609, who rebaptized himself and his congregation. He is widely regarded as having starting the Baptist movement.
8. Who established the first Baptist church in America?

Answer: Roger Williams

It was 1638 in Providence, Rhode Island. He had originally settled in Massachusets, but was 'asked' to leave because he did not agree with the predominantly Congregationalist population.
9. Where did the first two missionaries appointed by the SBC go?

Answer: China

That was in 1846. By 1891, it was up to 91 serving in six fields: China, Africa, Italy, Mexico, Brazil, and Japan. By the year 2000, they had over 5,000 workers around the world.

Answer: Charleston, South Carolina

It was established in Maine in 1682 and a few years later the entire congregation moved to South Carolina.
