Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Mary and Joseph were engaged to be married when he learnt that Mary was pregnant. What was his response to this bit of news?

Answer: break off the engagement

No doubt all of these questions went through the mind of Joseph because God's plan of salvation through Mary's (and to some extent his) child, was not yet revealed to him. Matthew 1:19 states that Joseph was a just man and did not want to publicly disgrace her, so he was minded to put her away in secret.

In other words, he wanted to break off the engagement and to do so as subtly as he possibly could.
2. Whilst Joseph was still in shock and pondering his next move, someone appeared to him in a dream with an explanation and instructions. Who was it that visited Joseph in a dream?

Answer: an angel of the Lord

Matthew 1: 20 says that whilst Joseph was thinking about what he should do in his situation, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and soothed his troubled mind. The angel told him not to panic and explained the marvelous plan that God had for Mary and for himself.
3. What was this astonishing revelation that was made known to Joseph in his dream?

Answer: Mary was impregnated by the Holy Spirit

In his dream, an angel of the Lord revealed unto Joseph that Mary's child was conceived by the Holy Spirit, thus making the child in her womb Holy.
4. Matthew 1:21 States that these words were spoken to Joseph in his dream. "She shall bring forth a son and you shall call His name Jesus." Why was the name "Jesus" given to this special child?

Answer: because the name means "saviour"

The angel of the Lord told Joseph, that Mary would give birth to a son and that he Joseph shall call His name Jesus. He was given this name to signify
His calling as an adult and that was to save mankind from sin.
5. All of these events took place to fulfil the word of the prophet who said, that a virgin shall give birth to a son called Immanuel. (which means, "God with us.") What was the name of the prophet who foretold this great wonder?

Answer: Isaiah

Matthew 1: 22-23 Says that all of this was done to fulfil the word of the Lord, which was spoken through a prophet. Isaiah 7:14 Predicted that the Lord himself would give a sign and a virgin shall conceive and bear a son and His name shall be called Immanuel.
Isaiah 9: 6, "Unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given and His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father and Prince of peace." What a Babe!
6. According to Matthew 1:24, when Joseph was himself again, he did as he was commanded in his dream. What was the command that he heeded?

Answer: Get married

According to Matthew 1:24, Joseph took Mary as his wife. (ie they got married!)
He however, did not consummate the marriage until Mary had given birth to her first born son Jesus, also called Immanuel. Thus the virgin conception, resulted in the virgin birth.
7. After Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, who came from the East in search of Him and referred to Him as "King of the Jews?"

Answer: wise men

According to Matthew 2:1-2, wise men came from the East in search of a newborn king; they had seen His star in the east and had followed it.
The text does not say how many they were but traditionally the number is three.
8. During the search for their prodigy, where did these visitors first stop and ask for directions?

Answer: Jerusalem

Matthew 2:2 Says that the visitors stopped at Jerusalem asking, "where is he that was born king of the Jews?" They had seen his star in the east and had come in search of Him, so that they could worship him.
9. When the news of the visitors to his country and their quest reached the king, he was disturbed and sent them away after consulting his Jewish leaders. What was the name of the king and where did he send these visitors?

Answer: Herod - Bethlehem

Herod was king at the time of Jesus' birth and he met with the religious leaders who informed him of the prophet Micah's prediction. A child the prophet said, would be born in Bethlehem and become a ruler in Israel. The king was troubled and sent the wise men on to Bethlehem, with an evil plan in his heart. Matthew 2:3-8,12.(Micah 5:2)
10. What did the gifts presented to Jesus by the Magi represent? (This representation is not mentioned in the Bible.)

Answer: they represented the events of His life

Three gifts were presented to Babe Jesus and each one depicted a divine role that was ordained for Him alone.
Gold - a gift for a king. (He was called King of the Jews)
Frankincense - a gift for a high priest. (He became a high priest)
Myrrh - a gift for the dying or the dead. (He died to save us from sin)
To accomplish this role, Jesus had to be more than a mere mortal and so the Virgin Birth took care of that detail in glorious fashion.
