Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Christ said that He came to destroy the law via His crucifixion and resurrection.

Answer: False

"Think not that I am come to destroy the law... I am not come to destroy, but to fulfill... Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments... shall be called the least in the Kingdom of heaven." (Matthew 5:17-19).
2. In Matthew 19, a man comes to Christ and asks Him which commandments he should keep. How many of the Ten Commandments does Christ list?

Answer: Five

In Matthew 19:18, Jesus lists five of the commandments of the Decalogue: (1)do not murder (2) do not commit adultery (3) do not steal (4) do not bear false witness and (5) honor thy mother and father. He then adds a sixth command, "Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself."
3. In the Gospels, Christ never repeats the command, "Honor the Sabbath to keep it holy." But in which of these ways does He Himself honor the Sabbath?

Answer: Both of these

Luke 4:16 tells us that Christ regularly attended the synagogue on the Sabbath, and that He stood up to read scripture there.
4. In the Gospels, Christ says that there are two commands that are the greatest. However, these commands are new; they are not to be found anywhere in the Old Testament.

Answer: False

Christ recites the greatest commandments in Matthew 22:35-40. Neither command is part of the Decalogue, but both can be found elsewhere in the Old Testament, in Leviticus 19:18 and in Deuteronomy 6:5.
5. The Decalogue includes the commandment, "Thou shalt not murder." Christ makes this prohibition even broader. What does He specifically (in those words) say one should not do?

Answer: Be angry with one's brother without a cause

In Matthew 5:22, Christ expands the commandment to include becoming angry at one's brother without a cause. He also says that whoever calls his brother "fool" will "be in danger of hellfire." The Jews believed that to destroy a man's reputation was similar to murdering the man himself.
6. The Decalogue contains the command "Thou shalt not commit adultery." What does Christ broaden this command to include?

Answer: All of these

In Matthew 5:28, He says that "whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart." In 5:32, He says, "But I say unto you, That whosoever shall put away his wife, saving for the cause of fornication, causeth her to commit adultery: and whosoever shall marry her that is divorced committeth adultery."
7. One of the commandments says to have no other gods before God. What does Christ say we cannot serve while simultaneously serving God?

Answer: Mammon

Matthew 6:24: "Ye cannot serve God and mammon [money]." Throughout Romans, Paul urges obedience to the government, and Christians have traditionally argued that it is appropriate for a Christian to show obedience to the government provided it is not demanding immoral behavior. One of the Ten Commandments urges people to honor their parents.

However, Christ does note that service to family can, in some instances, become an obstacle to service to Him. To the man who wished to remain behind to bury his father, Christ said, "Let the dead bury their dead, but go thou and preach the kingdom of God." (Luke 9:60)
8. What commandment did Christ say the Pharisees were breaking when they used the excuse, "It is a gift"?

Answer: Honor thy father and mother

See Matthew 15:1-6. Some were failing to honor their parents by failing to provide financial support. Instead, they would say their resources were dedicated to the temple, and thereby circumvent their duty.
9. How does the Bible translate Matthew 19:18 into English?

Answer: It depends what version you use

Some translations use "to kill", others "to murder". The Greek word used here, according to Strong's Greek concordance, is "phoneuco", which is usually translated "to murder".
10. When Christ is asked which is the greatest commandment in the law, He replies by quoting two commandments which are not a part of the Decalogue. However, they need not be a part of the Ten, because, according to Christ, "On these two commandments hang all the law and the ____"

Answer: Prophets

See Matthew 22:36-40. The two greatest commands are to "love the Lord thy God with all thy heart..." and to "love thy neighbor as thyself." Once this is done, the rest necessarily follows.
