1. Who was the king of Israel before David?

Answer: Saul

I Samuel 9 and 10 tell us that Saul was the first king, and David came after him. Solomon, Josiah, and Hezekiah were kings after David.
2. How many years did David reign as king?

Answer: 40

I Kings 2:11 - David reigned for seven years in Hebron, and then thirty-three years in Jerusalem.
3. Which of these was not one of David's wives?

Answer: Tamar

According to II Samuel 13:1, Tamar was David's daughter. Michal was David's first wife, the daughter of Saul (I Samuel 18:27). Ahinoam and Abigal were also David's wives, according to I Samuel 27:3.
4. Where did David begin his rule?

Answer: Hebron

II Samuel 2:1-3 tells us it was Hebron. Jerusalem was the capital of the united kingdom. (When David first began to rule, he only ruled over Judah. It was seven years before the nation was united.) Gath was a Philistine city, and Jabesh-gilead was were Saul's bones were buried (I Samuel 31:11-13).
5. Who built the Temple in Jerusalem?

Answer: Solomon

David asked the Lord in II Samuel 7 if he could build a house for Him. God told him no, but it was at this time that He established David's kingdom forever. Saul was dead at this point, and Absalom died soon after. Solomon began to build the Temple four years after his reign began (I Kings 6:1)
6. Who was the general of David's armies?

Answer: Joab

II Samuel 8:16 says that Joab was over the host. There are also many stories of Joab leading the army. Abner was Saul's general, and Ishbosheth was one of Saul's sons. Abiathar was a priest who traveled with David when he was fleeing from Saul.
7. At one time, David went to Achish, king of Gath, for protection from Saul. When Achish's army wanted to kill David, what did David do to get out of the city?

Answer: David pretended to be insane so they would let him go

I Samuel 21:12-15 says that David began to act like a madman. Achish said that he didn't need a madman on his hands and let David leave unharmed.
8. Why did David bring Mephibosheth to live with him at the palace?

Answer: To fulfill his vow to Jonathan

I Samuel 20 is the chapter where Jonathan finds out that Saul really does hate David and is intent on killing him. David and Jonathan make a vow to each other that they will show kindness to each other's families as long as they live. Mephibosheth was Jonathan's son.
9. How many times is David mentioned in the Bible?

Answer: 1,127

David is mentioned in the Bible more than any other person - even Paul or Jesus!
10. When Saul died, how did David react?

Answer: David mourned for the loss of Saul

David recognized that Saul was God's annointed king over Israel, and would not do anything to harm him, no matter what Saul did to him. II Samuel 1 talks about David hearing of Saul's death. Verse 17 says that David mourned the loss of Saul and Jonathan (they died the same day).
