Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The story begins with God's angel notifying Samson's barren mother that she is about to give birth to a Nazarite of God who will deliver Israel from the Philistines. Shortly after we are told of a second meeting with the angel. Why is the second meeting taking place?

Answer: Because Samson's father calls God to re-send the angel

The dominance of Samson's mother in the story is overwhelming. Samson's father is portrayed as a weak and suspicious person. For example, after the angel meets Samson's mother for the second time upon her husband's request, she rushes to call him, and then it is said that "he went after her" (Judges 13:11).

This is a very rare description of a man who is literally led by his wife. Notice that at both times the angel meets her alone first. In the second time, he reluctantly sees the father and treats him with disrespect (e.g. he actually refuses to dine with him).
2. According to the Bible (Judges chapters 13-14), what are Samson's parents' names?

Answer: Father: Manoah, Mother: not mentioned

In modern day Hebrew "manoah" means "deceased" and "rest". This may be seen as yet another example of the Father's down-graded depiction. The name of the mother is not mentioned.
3. Samson chooses a Philistine woman from Timnath as his wife. Albeit discontent, his parents join him on his way to Timnath, and witness him bare-handedly defeat a young lion.

Answer: False

Although Samson is accompanied by his parents on the voyage to Timnath, they are not present at the incident with the lion. On the storytelling level it can be explained that Samson detours the vineyards of Timnath whilst his parents do not (since he is not allowed to come near wine). But, this is an excellent chance for the storyteller to stress the huge distance between Samson and his parents (Samson "belongs" to God much more than he does to his parents).

It is also told that Samson does not even tell his parents of the incident. Even later, when he extracts honey from the lion's skeleton and brings it to his parents, it is explicitly written that he does not disclose the source of the honey to them.
4. The incident with the young lion becomes the background to Samson's riddle to the Philistines of Timnath. The riddle sets a bet between Samson and the Philistines. What are the stakes of this bet?

Answer: 30 sheets and 30 change of garments

The number 3 and its multiples are recurrent throughout the story.
In FunTrivia terms the riddle should be rated "Very Difficult" since it pertains to Samson's incident with the lion of which only he is aware. But Samson's weakness to the feminine power leads him to a loss after he is persuaded by his wife to reveal her the solution. She then surrenders it to her fellow people. This is but an omen to Samson's future destiny in the hands of another Philistine woman.
5. On two separate occasions, what animals does Samson use in his battles against the Philistines?

Answer: 300 foxes and the jawbone of an ass

In a contradicting manner to his great physical ability, Samson is also portrayed as an extremely artistic and imaginative character. He split the 300 foxes to 150 pairs, tied them by the tail and set the tails on fire. The foxes franticly disperse in the Philistine fields and burn them. Later on, the jawbone of the ass is used to kill Philistines. Samson finds the time to a poetic retreat immediately after he finishes slaughtering a thousand of them.
6. The doors of the gate of which Philistine city are removed and carried away by Samson?

Answer: Gaza

Time and time again, Samson is used by God to create friction with the Philistine rulers. After a long time in solitude, Samson goes to Philistine harlot in Gaza city. He is aware that the Gazans plan to catch him, wakes up early, removes Gaza's city gates and carries them to the area of Hebron (a distance of about 60km).
Gath and Ekron are other Philistine cities mentioned in the Bible.
7. Delilah is the third Philistine woman with which Samson is involved, and his true love. She is hired by the Philistines to lure Samson into surrendering the secret of his immense strength. How many times does Samson misinform Delilah with fictitious "secrets"?

Answer: 3

3, again. Samson is bent on destruction as he meets Delilah. Although he loves her, he must have realized at some stage that she has no feelings for him, and that she was leading him to his end. Yet, he is bound to play the game and the tragic part dictated to him by God.
8. Finally, Samson was "vexed unto death" by Delilah and he surrendered his secret to her. Delilah gets her payment. Samson's locks of hair are cut and he loses his strength. What is the immediate punishment that the Philistine captors inflict upon Samson?

Answer: They put out his eyes

As the nature of human hair is to grow back, logic would have it that they should have killed him at this point, but they insist on maiming and humiliating him.
By the way, the Hebrew text says that Delilah calls for a Philistine, then shaves Samson's hair herself, whilst the KJV translation claims that this is the Philistine who shaves Samson's hair upon Delilah's request (Judges 16:19).
9. What were Samson's last words?

Answer: "Let me die with the Philistines"

Samson was brought to Gaza and was set to be ridiculed during a victory ceremony in the name of Dagon, the Philistine god. In an ultimate display of his creativity, the blind Samson asks to be placed between the supporting pillars of the building. Asking God for a last surge of strength, he brings the building down, killing himself along with the 3000 Philistine attendees (Judges 16:30).
10. Where was Samson buried?

Answer: Between Zorah and Eshtaol

This is his birthplace and he is buried beside his father.
Nowadays in Israel Zorah and Eshtaol are a kibbutz and a village in the same region near Jerusalem (Beth Shemesh). A nearby junction is called "Shimshon junction" (Shimshon is Samson's Hebrew name). A famous Israeli football (soccer) team was called "Shimshon Tel Aviv".
