Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. We know that David slew the great Goliath with a sling. But do you know how many stones he brought with him that fateful day?

Answer: 5

With his confidence in God's provision, one would think David would have taken but one (he only needed one), but the Bible says in 1 Samuel 17:40 that he took "five smooth stones out of the brook, and put them in a shepherd's bag,"
What a sight that must have been: the Philistines stand with their shining armor gleaming in the sun, and up walks a shepherd boy in plain clothing, with a knapsack over his shoulder holding probably his lunch, a couple of rocks, and a sling, challenging the best warrior in the army. That is faith in action.
2. In Saul's jealous rage over the people praising David more than himself, what projectile did he use to try and slay David with?

Answer: Javelin

In 1 Samuel 18:7,11 the Bible describes the women singing praises: "Saul hath slain his thousands, and David his ten thousands."
Verse 11 says: "And Saul cast the javelin; for he said, I will smite David even to the wall with it. And David avoided out of his presence twice."

As the old saying goes: "No good deed will go unpunished." Saul was obviously a man of great pride and couldn't bear to hear anyone put before him.
3. In order to free the nation of Israel from its Moabite oppressors, Ehud used what weapon to kill the wicked King Eglon?

Answer: Dagger

King Eglon was so obese, that when Ehud plunged the dagger into his belly, the fat closed around it so that it could not be extracted. The story is told in Judges 3:20-22.
4. What unusual weapon did Samson use to kill exactly one thousand Philistines?

Answer: The jawbone of an ass

In Judges 15:9-15, the Judeans, afraid of further reprisals from the Philistine oppressors because of Samson's exploits, came to deliver Samson to them. He then allowed them to bind him. But when he heard the taunts of the Philistines, he broke free of his bonds, found the jawbone, and slew one thousand Philistines.
5. In Ezekiel's prophecy against Jerusalem, what battle device more associated with medieval warfare did he describe?

Answer: Battering ram

These images of warfare came before Nebuchadnezzar conquered Judah. Because of the wickedness of the people, God judged his people through other powerful nations. Ezekiel mentioned battering rams in Ezekiel 4:2.
6. Jael became a real "headache" to Sisera by using what implement as a weapon to "secure" victory over the Canaanites?

Answer: Tent nail

In Judges 4:16-21, Sisera was fleeing from Barak after his army had been thoroughly destroyed, and sought out an ally. Jael cunningly lured Sisera into her tent, as Sisera thought there was no emnity between Heber, Jael's husband, and Jabin, the King that Sisera served. He found out otherwise.

Some translate "nail" as "tent peg."
7. In 2 Samuel 18:14, what pub favorite did Joab use to wound Absalom when his hair became entangled in the branches of a tree?

Answer: Darts

David's failure to punish his eldest son Amnon caused Absalom to avenge his sister's rape. This, along with purposeful exaggerations, caused the eventual rebellion of Absalom against his father. Absalom's hair was very long and thick as described in 2 Samuel 14:26, and caused him to hang in midair after his mount ran under some low hanging branches.
8. After the Assyrians were defeated by the angel of the Lord, Sennecherib went home in defeat. As he was praying to his god, his sons came in and killed him. What weapon did they use?

Answer: Sword

The Assyrians would have routed Judah if not for God's intervention. They had laid waste to every people who opposed them up to this point. The army of 185,000 were all dead by morning. In 2 Kings 19:37, the prediction of the prophet Isaiah (2 Kings 19:7, and 2 Chronicles 32:21) was realized.
9. Whose iron spearhead weighed in at 600 shekels?

Answer: Goliath

The weight of Goliath's spearhead is recorded in 1Samuel 17:7. The equivalent in modern weight is 15lb or 7kg. Can you imagine throwing something with the weight of a men's bowling ball at the end of it?
10. Words can be hurtful and damaging when used the wrong way. In Proverbs 25:18, the author describes the words of a false witness. Two things he compares them to are a sword and a sharp arrow. What is the third weapon mentioned?

Answer: Maul

Throughout the Word of God, we are warned that one of the most damaging things known to man is the tongue. If we gave more thought to what we said before the words passed our lips, then perhaps the world would be a better place.
