Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Blood is red due to the presence of iron.

Answer: True

Iron, an important component of hemoglobin, is responsible for the familiar red color of blood.
2. Two is the only even prime number.

Answer: True

Since every even number greater than two is divisible by two and the number half of that, two is the only even prime number. Prime numbers are defined as numbers whose only factors are one and itself. The factors of 2 are 1 and 2 while the factors of 6 are 1, 2, 3, and 6. Numbers having at least three factors are called composite numbers, while numbers having three (for square numbers) or four factors are semi-prime numbers.
3. Atmospheric pressure on Mars is about 1/15 of that on Earth.

Answer: False

Mars's atmospheric pressure is actually less than 1/150th of Earth's, so you would need a spacesuit in order to survive on Mars.
4. 4^4 is 484.

Answer: False

4^4 is 256 while 484 is 22^2.
5. Uranus can be seen from Earth without any instrument.

Answer: True

Although Uranus can be seen with the naked-eye, though only with difficulty, it wasn't recognized as a planet until 1781 by William Herschel, who initially thought it was a comet. John Flamsteed actually saw Uranus in 1690 but didn't realize that he was looking at a planet; he thought it was a star and catalogued it as 34 Tauri.
6. 12 in the decimal system is equivalent to 10 in the dozenal system.

Answer: True

Dozenal is the base-12 numbering system, while the numbers in everyday usage are decimal, which is base-10. In the dozenal system, there are T and E in addition to 0-9. Counting to 10 in dozenal = 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 T E 10. Therefore, 10 in dozenal is the same as 12 in the decimal system. Unlike the decimal system, dividing any dozenal number by 3, 6 and 9 would not result in a repeating number. Conversely, dividing a non-divisible number by 5 would result in a repeating number.
7. 91 is a prime number.

Answer: False

91 is a composite number, whose factors are 7 and 13, and 91 is also a semi-prime since it only has four factors.
8. 2 to the ninth power is the same as 8 to the third power.

Answer: True

2^9 and 8^3 are both equal to 512. These exponents are linked mathematically, since the exponential quotient of 2 and 8 is 3 (as 2^3 is 8) while the quotient between 9 and 3 is also 3 since 9/3 is 3.
9. There is a "heart" on Pluto.

Answer: True

In 2015, the New Horizons probe took images of Pluto as it whizzed by, enabling people to see what the world looks like in high resolution. Scientists were amazed to see that there is a prominent heart-shaped feature on Pluto, informally named Sputnik Planum.
10. The atomic number for neon is 10.

Answer: True

Neon is the tenth lightest element and the second lightest noble gas. The gas can be used in neon signs. Neon comes from the Greek word 'neos', meaning new.
11. The only difference between fermions and bosons is their particle spins.

Answer: True

Fermions are particles that all have half-integer spins while bosons all have whole-integer spins. Fermions include quarks (which make up protons and neutrons) and leptons (which includes electrons). Bosons include W and Z bosons, and the Higgs boson, also known as "the God Particle".
12. On equinoxes, everywhere around the world will see exactly twelve hours of day and night.

Answer: False

It would seem logical that the sun is in the sky for exactly twelve hours around the world, since the sun is located exactly halfway between the north and south poles on equinoxes, while each day last exactly 24 hours. However, it is not true since the Earth has an atmosphere.

The air around the Earth refracts the light from the sun, even when below the horizon but close enough, making us see the sun before it physically rises or after it sets.
13. Blood cancer can occur.

Answer: True

I't's generally known that cancers affect the organs, like lung cancer, breast cancer, brain cancer, liver cancer and skin cancer. Blood cancer can occur too, even though blood is not considered an organ, but just a medium. There are three main forms of blood cancer - myeloma, leukemia and lymphoma.
14. The symbolism for the constellation of Orion is "the Belt".

Answer: False

Although Orion has three stars that make up Orion's Belt, the Belt is not the symbolism for Orion and none of the other constellations has that symbolism. The correct symbolism is "Orion the Hunter".
15. The sun passes through the constellation Gemini during the northern hemisphere winter.

Answer: False

A winter constellation is one that can only be seen during the night during that particular season. The sun passes through Gemini during the first third of the northern hemisphere's summer, when the sun is on the opposite side of the celestial sphere as winter. However Gemini is a winter constellation if you live in the southern hemisphere.
