Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is a steam boiler?

Answer: A closed steel vessel, containing water which is heated for the purpose of generating steam.

A steam boiler is designed to contain water and steam of both high temperature and pressure.
2. What is the purpose of a gauge glass on a steam boiler?

Answer: To indicate the correct water level in the boiler.

The gauge glass is an essential mounting fitted to a boiler. The boiler should not be operated if the gauge glass is faulty.
3. What is the vital part of all boilers?

Answer: The first part of the boiler which becomes over heated due to the lowering water level.

As the water level continues to fall in a firing boiler, this will cause the metal to become overheated and could cause the catastrophic failure of the boiler pressure parts.
4. In fire tube boilers, what type of plug is fitted to put the fires out when the vital part is exposed?

Answer: A fusible plug.

A fusible plug has a soft metal center which melts due to the boilers excessive heat. The now hollow plug allows the steam to enter the furnace space which will put out the fire.
5. What is the purpose of excess air in relation to boiler combustion?

Answer: To ensure complete combustion.

All fossil fuels to be burnt efficiently must have a minimum amount of air to completely burn. Therefore the only way to ensure that the fuel is burnt you must have more air than is needed. This is measured via 02 residual reading prior to the combustion gases entering the atmosphere.
6. How does a feed water economizer work?

Answer: It allows heat transfer to occur from the flue gases to the feed water.

The economizer is located in the hot flue gas pass. The boiler feed water passes through the inside tubes of the economizer. The heat from the flue gases passes over these pipes and the heat is passed into the feed water. This recaptured heat reduces the amount of fuel needed to be used as the water temperature going into the boiler is increased.
7. Why is boiler feed water quality important?

Answer: All are correct.

Boiler feed water quality is a very large subject and takes a great deal of study to understand it thoroughly. When water boils almost none of the impurities from the water carry over with the steam. The impurities will accumulate in the boiler water and very quickly settle out in the boiler.

This will not only lead to eventual failure of the pressure parts but reduces the efficiency of the boiler due to poor heat transfer through the steel heating surfaces.
8. What fuel is used to make PF (pulverized fuel)?

Answer: Coal.

Pulverized fuel is coal which has been broken down to a very small powder which burns very efficiently, generally in larger boiler.
9. What is the purpose of a safety valve fitted to a steam boiler?

Answer: To release excess pressure.

Safety valves are considered an essential fitting to a boiler and if it does not function correctly at the set pressure, the boiler should not be operated.
10. What is the basic purpose of superheaters in a boiler?

Answer: To increase the temperature of the steam.

By increasing the temperature of the steam you can get more work from the steam, thereby increasing the efficiency of the process.
