Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Sci/Tech is one of the broadest categories in Quizzyland. Which of the following quiz topics is NOT in the Sci/Tech category?

Answer: Famous scientists and inventors

Quizzes on famous scientists and inventors go to People/Scientists and Inventors. Weather is a subcategory in Sci/Tech/Environment. The human body is a subcategory in Sci/Tech/Health. The Internet is a subcategory in Sci/Tech/Technology and Computers.
2. Which of the following quiz topics is NOT in the Sci/Tech category?

Answer: Zoology

Quizzes on Zoology go in the Animals category.
3. Which of the following quiz topics is NOT in the Sci/Tech category?

Answer: Cars

Car quizzes go in the "Auto World" category in World. All of the the other categories are subcategories of Technology and Computers.
4. Which of the following topics IS acceptable for a Sci/Tech quiz?

Answer: Uses of calculus

This was a tricky one! The calculus quiz can go in Math. Military quizzes go to World/Military Matters. Astrology quizzes go to Hobbies. History of space exploration quizzes go to History/Specialized History/Man in Space.
5. Which of the following questions is acceptable on your new Astronomy quiz?

Answer: According to the red shift effect, which bodies will appear redder- receding galaxies or approaching ones?

We've already heard about the Great Red Spot- plenty of times. Entertainment questions belong on entertainment-related quizzes, not on science quizzes. And lastly, opinion-based questions aren't suitable here.
6. In general, does this category accept 5-question quizzes?

Answer: No

Almost any interesting subject can be expanded into a longer quiz.
7. You want to write a Chemistry quiz. Which of the following is most likely to be accepted?

Answer: A quiz on the uses of sodium compounds in industry

The other quizzes are unimaginative, and we already have plenty!
8. You want to write a quiz on the Internet. Which of the following questions is acceptable?

Answer: What does a router do?

All of the other questions can and will change with time. You need to make sure that your quiz will be as playable 5 years from now as it is today.
9. Is this acceptable interesting info? In caprine species, both males and females heterozygous for the polled allele produce, on average, 50% polled offspring, i.e., the production of keratinized cranial structures is entirely absent. Offspring which are homozygous at this allele will often show signs of hermaphrodism.

Answer: No

Remember that your quizzes should be educational. If the average player would not understand your vocabulary, please define your terms! Remember that many of our players are teens or younger, or non-English as a first language speakers. An acceptable rewrite of the gobbledegook above would be, "In goats, both male and female animals that possess one copy of a gene called "polled" will not have any horns.

It is a dominant gene, so any animal with one copy of this gene won't have horns. However, if a goat has two copies of this gene, not only will it not have horns, but it may be a hermaphrodite- it may have some of the sexual structures of both male and female goats."
10. You want to write a quiz on human parasites. You decide to write one where you give the common name of the parasite and ask the player to fill in the blank with the scientific name of the parasite. You add lots of interesting info on the parasites, where they are found, and what they do. Is this an acceptable quiz format?

Answer: No

Players hate impossible quizzes, and rate them very poorly. Most people will never learn anything from your quiz, because it will be so difficult that they will never finish it, submit it and see your great interesting info.
11. You know that your spelling skills aren't too hot. What is the best way to write your quiz to prevent making most errors?

Answer: Write it in a word processor, then copy it into the quiz form

It's the quiz writer's job to submit an error-free quiz. The spell-check in a word processor is your friend! It won't catch all errors, though, so remember to take a close look through your quiz before submitting it.
12. A great place to get questions for your science quiz is to copy them from the tests in your science book.

Answer: No

Nope- that's plagiarism, and we don't allow it! Everything on your quiz must be in your own words.
13. The Sci/Tech category allows science-themed scrambled word quizzes.

Answer: No

No scrambles of any kind are accepted.
14. It's OK if your Sci/Tech quiz has a few questions on it that are already on other quizzes.

Answer: No

Quizzes must be original- who wants to answer the same questions all day long?
15. You want to write a very simple science quiz for kids. You should thus submit it to For Children.

Answer: Yes

For Children has science categories just for kids.
