Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Help! I want to find out what a particular new phrase I just heard means. What exactly can be found in this "Urban Dictionary" I have stumbled across?

Answer: Word and slang meanings

The Urban Dictionary was founded in 1999. Initially it included only slang words and phrases that weren't found elsewhere, but it quickly embraced other word definitions to make it a composite of both standard and non-standard dictionaries. To keep it up to date, the online dictionary accepts (vetted) submissions from its users.
2. Help! I want to know if a particular urban legend is true, false or unverifiable. Which website, founded in 1995, could I visit to help give me the answer?

Answer: snopes.com

Snopes.com started small and grew with the volume of internet urban legends. Since its beginnings, it has added other content including details about scams and other e-mails to look out for, making it a valuable site if you receive a suspicious e-mail. Snopes was named after characters (of questionable nature) in a novel by William Faulkner.
3. Help! I think my computer has been infected by malware. Which of these is most likely to be of direct help if I am confident that I can remove it with the right advice?

Answer: A technical blog

There are numerous technical blogs which explain how to get rid of the most common pieces of malware in quite straight-forward langauge. Most of them do caution you to call an expert if you aren't confident of fixing the problem yourself. And take care because some try to sell you (often needless) software to remove the malware.
4. What will the "Way Back Machine" help me to do online?

Answer: Access archived versions of web pages

The "Way Back Machine" is a set of archived web pages, offering 'snapshots' of sites as they were at particular times in the past (meaning you can access content that is no longer online). Sites as far back as 1996 can be found, illustrating just how much more user-friendly the average web page is nowadays.
5. At the start of 2013, the last provider of free (legal) anti-virus software online discontinued their product.

Answer: False

In early 2013, there were a range of free anti-virus software packages, the most commonly used one being AVG Free. These packages offer basic scanning and protection for home internet users.
6. Help! Can you tell me which of the following search engines has been helping people find things online for the longest? (i.e. which came first of the four?)

Answer: WebCrawler

WebCrawler was considered to be the first search engine to index entire web pages. It was released in April 1994. Yahoo! was founded in 1994, but did not immediately launch a search engine; rather it was a directory of websites. Ask Jeeves launched in 1997 as a 'plain language' search engine. Google launched relatively late, in 1998.

The first ever search engine was thought to be Archie, launched in 1990.
7. Help! What kind of information could I get from the websites "Rotten Tomatoes" and "IMDb"?

Answer: Film reviews

The "Rotten Tomatoes" website was launched in 1998 as a film review website, but grew to become a forum for discussions of films and a variety of other entertainment. "IMDb", which stands for "Internet Movie Database", launched in 1990 and includes a large database relating to films, television and video games.

In mid 2012 it was reported to have information on over 2.5 million titles and a membership of over 45 million.
8. Help! There are so many web pages. If I was searching the web in July 2013, was there any way of getting a scientifically-based estimate of how many pages there are?

Answer: Yes

www.worldwidewebsize.com provides estimates of how many web sites exist at any point in time. In early August 2013, there were an estimated 3.71 billion pages. The incredible thing about that estimate is that it is claimed to be conservative; in other words, there are likely to be many more.

Many sites attempt predictions, and it should be noted that these vary quite dramatically depending on the approach taken.
9. Help! I really want to go to a website that tells me in one place all about how things work. Which site, founded by Marshall Brain in 1998, would give me what I am looking for?

Answer: Howstuffworks.com

"How Stuff Works" spawned a range of other educational products, including books, TV shows and items containing trivial facts. The site uses a range of media, including videos and diagrams, to simply explain things in an entertaining manner.
10. Help! I'd love to check out the news across the world, and of course there are many websites allowing me to do that. What move have some of the large media outlets made, which started in late 2010, that is likely to have a large impact on our access to online news?

Answer: Charging users to access news

Newspapers across the world, including US, Canada, UK and Australia have all seen moves from some of the bigger media outlets to charge users. In most cases, there is brief content available for a story, and users have to sign up and pay to read the detail. This move is in response to falling newspaper sales, which have been an issue for a long time in the industry.
