Math: Exponents Trivia Quiz

This is a pretty simple quiz on exponents. Since I couldn't denote powers any other way I wrote the questions and answers in word form. For purposes of this quiz, assume that x is any positive real number.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the equivalent of x cubed (x to the third power)?

Answer: x times x times x

This is the basic definition for exponents. Take the value of the exponent and multiply that many x's together.
2. What is the equivalent of x to the first power?

Answer: x

Since the exponent is one, there is only one x, and no multiplication is necessary. So the answer is x.
3. What is the equivalent of x to the zero power?

Answer: 1

This is part of the definition of exponents. Any real number (except zero) raised to the zero power equals one. This is because exponents involve multiplication and one is the basic common factor of all real numbers (except zero).
4. What is the equivalent of x squared times x cubed?

Answer: x to the fifth power

x squared times x cubed is (x times x) times (x time x times x) = x to the fifth power. To multiply powers of x, simply add the exponents.
5. What is the equivalent of x to the negative one?

Answer: 1 divided by x

Just as x squared is x cubed divide by x, x to the negative one must be x to the zero (which is one) divide by x.
6. What is the equivalent of x to the negative two?

Answer: 1 divided by x squared

It is 1 divided by x divided by x, which is 1 divide by x squared. When you have a negative exponent, divide 1 by the power of x that corresponds to the positive value of the exponent (x to the negative 3 = 1 divided by x cubed).
7. What is equivalent to x to the one half power?

Answer: Square root of x

Since when multiplying powers of x together, we add the exponents then (x to the one half) times (x to the one half) must equal x to the one (which is x). So x to the one half is the square root of x.
8. What is the equivalent of x to the one-third power?

Answer: Cube root of x

Adding exponents to multiply, (x to the one-third) cubed equals x to the one (which is x). So x to the one-third power is the cube root of x.
9. What is the equivalent of x to the two-thirds power?

Answer: the square of the cube root of x

Again, multiplying by adding exponents, x to the two-thirds must equal (x to the one-third) times (x to the one-third), or the square of the cube root of x. It is also the same as the cube root of x squared.
10. What is the equivalent of x to the negative two-thirds power?

Answer: 1 divided by the cube root of x squared

Since x to the two-thirds power is the cube root of x squared, to find x to the negative two-thirds power, divide 1 by x to the two-thirds power.
