Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the the main source of fart gas?

Answer: The air we swallow

Most of the air we swallow, especially the oxygen, is absorbed by the body before the gas enters the intestines. By the time the air reaches the large intestine, most of it is now nitrogen. Chemical reactions between stomach acid and intestinal fluids may produce carbon dioxide, which is also a component of air and a product of bacterial action.
2. On average, how much gas a day does one person produce?

Answer: Half a litre

14 farts are made on a daily basis by one average person. However, this depends on what you eat as well (eggs!).
3. How long does it take for the smell of a fart to reach the farter's nose (the person who made the fart)?

Answer: 13-20 seconds

The fart stinks immediately upon expulsion. However, seeing as the fart is shot away from the culprit it takes several seconds to spread out and back to the farter's nose.
4. What time of the day is it most likely for a gentleman to fart?

Answer: In the morning

This outbreak of gas is known as 'morning thunder'. This mainly takes place in the trip to the bathroom.
5. A burp is actually a fart except out the wrong end.

Answer: False

A burp has a different chemical composition than a fart. Burping is associated with regurgitation - by the valve at the top of the stomach not producing a tight seal. So the stomach contents float up towards the loose seal and tend to come up causing a burp.
6. Is it possible to ignite farts?

Answer: Yes

Farts burn because they usually contain methane and hydrogen which are both flammable gasses. They burn with a blue or yellow flame. However, the flame can travel back up to your colon, or burn your clothes.
7. What animal has the highest output of farts?

Answer: Termite

Believe it or not, it is! Their farts are also considered to be a major contributor towards global warming due to the portion of methane when they blow off.
8. If you farted in space it will propel you forwards.

Answer: True

Seeing as there is no gravity or any other opposing force to move you, a fart would indeed move you.
9. Is a fart an acid, neutral or a base?

Answer: Acid

Farts are rich in carbon dioxide, which when dissolved in water would turn into carbonic acid, and the hydrogen sulfide would make hydro-sulfuric acid. This combination is a weak acid.
10. If a fart is lethal enough can it kill you (just normally farting)?

Answer: No

There have been rumors of many dying of farting but all have been explained as non-fart deaths.
