Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The term "forensic" derives from which language?

Answer: Latin

According to Dictionary. com- "Origin: 1650-60; L foréns(is) of, belonging to the forum, public (see forum, -ensis) + ic". History records indicate that the first known use of forensic science was in 44 B.C. A Roman physician named Antistius was summoned to examine the corpse of the would-be emperor, Gaius Julius Caesar.

In the end, history tells us, the senators who murdered the Roman heir to the throne all paid with their lives. Anstistius gave his verdict in the forum, giving us the modern usage.
2. In forensics, criminologists use AFIS to search an online database for fingerprint matches. What does AFIS stand for?

Answer: Automated Fingerprint Identification System

Although AFIS has many fingerprints on file, it only has prints of people convicted of felonious crimes. People who have not committed crimes before will not be on AFIS.
3. If there is a case of arson, the easiest way to find and identify an accelerant is to use what?

Answer: A sniffer

An accelerant is used to get a fire going. E.g: gasoline, kerosene, and other flammable liquids. A sniffer takes examples of fumes and tests them to see what they are.
4. A forensic odontologist uses a victim's teeth to try and identify the body.

Answer: True

A victim's teeth can be very helpful in identifying a body because the pulp inside a person's tooth contains DNA.
5. The study of bugs and their development on human corpses to determine time of death is called forensic ________mology.

Answer: Ento

Forensic entomologists study the larvae growth on human corpses to determine when this person died. They can do this because different bugs feed on corpses at different stages of decomposition.
6. There are two types of wounds people can get when they are shot. What are they?

Answer: Entry wound, Exit wound

The entry wound is where the bullet entered and the exit wound is where the bullet left. Sometimes though, there is not an exit wound. The bullet does not always pass right through the body.

The study of gunshots and bullets is called ballistics.
7. Blood ___ analysis is studying which way the blood flowed if there was force involved.

Answer: Splatter

Blood spatter analysis can prove the difference between a suicide and a homicide.
8. What is generally meant by "involuntary manslaughter"?

Answer: Killing someone without meaning to.

An example of manslaughter is if you hit and kill a pedestrian while driving a car in an accident. The driver did not mean to kill the pedestrian, but either way, it happened (Thanks to Feminine_Mystique for the correction on the term "manslaughter"). The precise definition can vary from state to state, but the general principle is the lack of intent.
9. A fingerprint brush uses lion's mane hair.

Answer: False

A fingerprint brush needs to use soft hair, and camel hair or squirrel hair brushes are often used to brush off dust and find prints.
10. This chemical can be used to detect blood, even if it's been wiped from a surface.

Answer: Luminol

Luminol is a chemical agent that reacts to the iron present in hemoglobin.
