Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Is division by zero possible?

Answer: no

Let's try with an example:

You go to the supermarket to buy product "X" with 100 dollars on your hand. If each product was 1 dollar, you could buy 100 of them. If each one was 2 dollars, you could buy 50. But what happens if they were free? How many could you buy? Yes, as many as you want. Also think: Any number multiplied by zero is equal to zero so if you do x/0, where x is not 0, which number multiplied by zero is equal to x? None!
2. What is x+0 equal to?

Answer: x

Adding/subtracting zero is the same as adding/subtracting nothing so the number stays the same.
3. X^0, where x is not 0, is equal to 0.

Answer: False

Any x different from 0 to the power of zero is equal to 1. However, 0^0 is undefined.
4. The binary system has two digits. Which are they?

Answer: 0 and 1

The binary system is mostly used in computer science. 0 means "off" and 1 means "on". In order to express a binary number as a decimal number you have to express it in powers of two. For example:

111000 in binary is 1*2^5+1*2^4+1*2^3+0*2^2+0*2^1+0*2^0= 56
5. Adding a zero at the left of a number is the same as adding nothing.

Answer: True

Try with a number, for example, 1234. This is:

1*10^3+2*10^2+3*10^1+^*10^0

If we add a zero to the left:

0*10^4+1*10^3+2*10^2+3*10^1+^*10^0= 1234
6. What is the zero of a function?

Answer: The root of a function.

A zero in a function is the value of x so that the function is zero. For example in the function f(x)=6x+6, the zero is x=-1 since f(-1)= 6*(-1)+6=0.
Graphically, is the point of f that intercepts x-axis.
7. Find y: 1/5+2y=1/5

Answer: 0

1/5+2y=1/5
2y=0/5
y=0/5/2=0

What I try to show here is that though is impossible to divide by zero, it can be the dividend of the division, which result will always be the same: zero.
8. If f(x)=5/(x-6), what is the domain (all possibles values of x) of f?

Answer: R - 6

Now you know 0 can't be the denominator. Then:

x-6=0
x=6
6 is not in the domain.
9. Zero is the cardinality of which of the following sets?

Answer: Horns of a human body.

Cardinality means the number of elements of a set. When the cardinality is zero, this means that the set is empty.
10. The idea of zero arose in which of the following countries?

Answer: India

Since 5th century BC Indian religions accepted the creation of the world from "the nothing". Later, this idea reached Europe, with the expansion of Islam, allowing a lot of studies such as financial maths, infinity and more.
