The hosts defeated Argentina in a thrilling final that ended 4-2. Brazil went out of the Group Stage, in which only the winners of the four groups went through; they finished Group 2 with 2 points, having defeated Bolivia 4-0, but after losing 2-1 to Yugoslavia, who finished with 4 points, as they also beat Bolivia 4-0 to qualify for the semi-finals.

Italy, like many European teams, chose not to enter due to the difficulty of travelling to South America.

Romania played in Group 3, finishing second on 2 points behind Uruguay, having beaten Peru 2-1, but losing 4-0 to the eventual winners. The Netherlands did not want to enter, nor did Spain, and nor did Lithuania.

The Group Stage game between Chile and France was one of the lowest-scoring games of the tournament, ending 1-0 to Chile.

Varallo scored one of Argentina's 6 goals against Mexico. He was notable for being the last surviving player who participated in the tournament, before he passed away in 2010, at the age of 100, 80 years after the tournament was held.
