In the third place playoff game, Germany beat Uruguay 3-2. Paul the Octopus resided at a Sea Life Centre in Oberhausen, Germany. Previously, he predicted the results of the matches involving the German team in Euro 2008. Out of the six predictions, four were correct. On the other hand, for the seven matches involving Germany in the 2010 FIFA World Cup, Paul amazingly predicted correctly the results for all seven matches.

Some scientists explained that the different colors, patterns (horizontal stripes) and shapes of the flags might influence Paul's decision.
