Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which Scottish golfer came from 10 strokes back in final round of the 1999 British Open Championship?

Answer: Paul Lawrie

Lawrie shot a final round 67 to close the gap to 3 at the end of his round. His comeback was completed by an epic collapse by Jean van de Velde. Van de Velde had a triple bogey on the 18th hole, to force a 3 man playoff, which Lawrie won.
2. Which National League baseball team, down to their final strike twice, came back to win the 2011 World Series?

Answer: St. Louis Cardinals

The Cardinals were down 2 runs in both the 9th and 10th innings of game 6. David Freese hit a tying 2 run triple in the 9th inning. Lance Berkman tied the game in the 10th with a single, Freese then won it with a walk off homerun in the 11th. This became the 4th walk off homerun in World Series history.
3. Which college basketball team, from the bluegrass state, came from 31 points down in 1994 to defeat LSU in what is known as the "Mardi Gras Miracle"?

Answer: Kentucky Wildcats

Kentucky trailed 68-37 with 15 minutes and 30 seconds to play. They took their first lead with 19 seconds to go (since leading 1-0 at the start of the game). The Wildcats beat the LSU Tigers 99-95.
4. Which New York baseball team, that called Shea Stadium home, made a great comeback in game 6 of the 1986 World Series?

Answer: Mets

Down 2 runs in the 10th inning, and with no one on base, the Mets began their comeback. It was punctuated by the infamous ground ball through Bill Buckner's legs. They then went on to win game 7 and capture the Championship.
5. Which Knick-Killer, and Spike Lee antagonist, scored 8 points in 18 seconds to lead the Indiana Pacers to a comeback win in a 1995 NBA Playoff game?

Answer: Reggie Miller

The Knicks were up by 6 points with 18 seconds left to play. Reggie Miller made a 3 point shot, stole the inbounds pass, made a quick 3 point shot, and then capped off the Pacers victory with 2 free throws to stun the Knicks.
6. This famous baseball comeback happened in 1951 by a New York team that came from 13 1/2 games back in August. They relocated to San Francisco a few years later. Which team?

Answer: Giants

The Giants forced a tie which led to a 3 game playoff against the Dodgers to decide who would go to the World Series. This, of course, led to the famous game 3 homerun by Bobby Thomson's "Shot Heard Round The World". And also the famous Russ Hodges' announce call of the "The Giants Win The Pennant"!
7. In this 1992-93 NFL Playoff game, which team needed a huge comeback from a 32 point deficit in the 3rd quarter to defeat the Houston Oilers 41-38 in overtime?

Answer: Buffalo Bills

This comeback was amazing in that the Bills were led by back-up quarterback Frank Reich, who had replaced an injured Jim Kelly in the 2nd quarter. They also lost future Hall of Fame running back Thurman Thomas before the comeback began. The Bills moved on to the Super Bowl, and lost the 3rd of four consecutive Super Bowls.
8. Future Buffalo Bills comeback star Frank Reich led what team back from a 31-0 halftime deficit against the Miami Hurricanes in a NCAA Football game in 1984?

Answer: Maryland

In a future omen, Frank Reich came off the bench and led Maryland to an amazing victory. He scored 3 touchdowns in the 3rd quarter, and threw another in the 4th to cap a 42-9 2nd half comeback to win 42-40. If you wanted to win football games with great comebacks, Frank Reich seems to be the man!
9. What American won the 1989 Tour de France by overcoming a 50 second deficit on the final day?

Answer: Greg LeMond

In a sport that is difficult to make up time, LeMond managed to beat leader Laurent Fignon by 58 seconds in the final stage. What makes this comeback more special is that LeMond had returned to the Tour after being shot in the back in 1987 hunting accident and nearly losing his life.
10. Which team, from Fenway Park, became the first team in Major League Baseball history to comeback from a 3-0 deficit, when it won the 2004 ALCS against their hated rivals, the New York Yankees?

Answer: Boston Red Sox

Down by 1 run in the 9th inning of game 4, the Red Sox were up against future All-time saves leader Mariano Rivera. They went on to tie the game up, then scored 2 runs in the 12th inning to win. This led to an avalanche, as they won the next 3 games and win the ACLS; and then went on to sweep the St. Louis Cardinals 4-0 in the World Series.
