Dennis began his career with the Cleveland Indians in 1976. He was a starter for the Indians, the Red Sox, and for the Cubs before being traded to Oakland in 1987. When he joined the Athletics, he was used as a relief pitcher and became the closer after an injury to Jay Howell, a role he never relinquished in his tenure with Oakland.
