At 14 (her birthday is in November) Kerri was the youngest member ever of a Women's Artistic US gymnastics team. Since having such young gymnasts became controversial and was unsafe for such young girls health, the International Olympic Committee, and the International Gymnastics Federation changed the rules to protect the girls. Never again will such young gymnasts compete at the Olympics.

The USA finished 3rd in the team competition, which at that time was the best finish by the USA in a fully attended Olympic Games.

In 1994 at the U.S. Classic, Kerri over compensated on bars and flew over the lower bar, hitting her face on the bar. Her face then slammed into the mat while her legs flipped backwards and hit her on the back of the head. She was out of training for over eight weeks and thought about stopping altogether. She, however, considered everything and went back to the gym.

She ran down the runway, her bad ankle feeling like it was only attached by a thread. Then she vaulted and landed on one foot. She turned, saluted the judges, and then collapsed in pain on the floor. Kerri's ankle was immobilized, her USA warmup jacket was brought to her, and Bella carried her out to the podium where she received her gold medal.
