When the unnamed AFL Minneapolis team joined the already successful NFL as an expansion team, the new AFL had to hustle to come up with an eighth team. The city of Oakland unexpectedly received a team franchise and the already-picked draftees of the Minneapolis group, making the Raiders the eighth charter member of the American Football League.

1963 was the first Raider season for Al Davis. He was hired as head coach and general manager at the age of 33. The Raiders organization gave him his first head coaching position in professional football.
