Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which player created the term 'Mendoza line'?

Answer: George Brett

George Brett coined the term in reference to Mario Mendoza, a shortstop who played from 1974-82 and had some of the most atrocious offensive seasons in history. The Mendoza Line refers to batting averages below .215, Mendoza's career batting average.
2. Which of these teams made the playoffs in the 1980s?

Answer: White Sox

The Mariners and Rangers would not make the playoffs until 1995 and 1996 respectively, while the Reds didn't win the old NL West between 1979 and 1990. The White Sox won the AL West in 1983 under Tony LaRussa, losing to the Orioles in the ALCS.
3. Who won the AL batting title in 1926?

Answer: Heinie Manush

Interestingly enough, Manush and Cobb played together on the tigers from 1923-26. Manush hit .378 that year, a career high. He had a lifetime batting average of .330.
4. What pitcher holds the record for most strikeouts in a season?

Answer: Matt Kilroy

Yes, that's right, Matt Kilroy. Kilroy accomplished the feat as a 20-year old rookie in 1886, fanning 513 batters over 583 innings, going 29-34.
5. Al Kaline never won the World Series.

Answer: False

Kaline won the World Series in 1968, his sixteenth season. He played with the Tigers from 1953-1974.
6. Who led the 1986 Houston Astros in saves?

Answer: Dave Smith

Smith was a reliever for 13 seasons from 1980-92, playing eleven with the Astros and the last two for the Cubs. He was an All-Star in 1986 and 1990.
7. How many times did teams managed by Casey Stengel finish over .500?

Answer: 13

Stengel managed the Yankees from 1949-60, winning ten pennants and seven World Series titles and finishing above .500 every season. He coached the Dodgers from 1934-36 and the Braves from 1938-43, never once finishing better than fifth in 1938, his only other winning season. He also managed the Mets in their first four seasons, leading them to a woeful 175-404 record.
8. Which of these teams did Jim Clancy never play for?

Answer: Dodgers

Clancy was a longtime Blue Jay, playing with Toronto from 1977-88. He pitched for the Astros from '89-91 before being dealt to the Braves on the trading deadline where he closed out his career.
9. Which team in the 20th century was the first to lose 100 games in a season in the AL?

Answer: Washington Senators

The 1904 Washington Senators went 38-113, the first to lose 100 in a single season. The Yankees were then known as the Baltimore Orioles, the Orioles were known as the St. Louis Browns, and the Cleveland Indians were the Cleveland Blues. The Senators, of course, became the Twins in 1961.
10. What player won the first Triple Crown in baseball history?

Answer: Paul Hines

Hines accomplished this in 1878 with the Providence Grays, when he hit .358 along with 92 hits. These were big numbers in the late 1880's. That year, the Grays finished 3rd in the National League with a 33-27 record.
