Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who was the captain of the Australian One-Day team for the World Cup?

Answer: Ricky Ponting

'Punter' was picked as captain for the One-Day squad when Steve Waugh was dropped from the team in early 2002.
2. Which of these wicketkeepers was the vice-captain for the World Cup 2003?

Answer: Adam Gilchrist

'Gilly' also plays as opening batsman with Matthew Hayden. Maher was the backup wickie.
3. Who was the regular opening batsman (he's also a Queenslander)?

Answer: Matthew Hayden

'Haydos' was an opening partner for Gilchrist in the major matches. They are both left-handed batsmen.
4. A leading pace bowler for the Aussies was ______ ?

Answer: Glenn McGrath

McGrath took 7-15 against Namibia on 27th February in their Pool A match (this was after 12 runs off the first over!). He was also Australia's 2nd highest wicket-taker for the tournament, behind Brett Lee.
5. Who was Australia's fastest bowler for the Cup?

Answer: Brett Lee

Brett reached 160.6 km/h against Zimbabwe (he also bowled 160.7 km/h, but this was a no-ball). He was having a continuing battle with Pakistan's Shoiab Aktar for the title of 'World's Fastest Bowler'.
6. Who was originally brought into the team so that Australia could play Shane Warne (spin bowler) with a left arm wrist spinner in the big matches?

Answer: Brad Hogg

This Western Australian all-rounder was supposed to play with Warne, until Warne was given his one-year ban for using a diuretic.
7. This right-hander is from Western Australia and was a regular No 3, 4 or 5 batter. He also bowled some medium pace. Who is he?

Answer: Damien Martyn

He played with a broken index finger in the final. The other three are cack-handed (lefties). From the Orange ad: 'Excuse me, Mr Gilchrist, what do you bowl?' to which Gilly replies: 'Me? Bowl?'
8. Who was picked as the backup wicketkeeper?

Answer: Jimmy Maher

He can also open the batting. Gilchrist (the first-choice wickie) likes his style because he commentates on the match from behind the stumps.
9. This man bats right handed and bowls a right handed off break. He is a Queenslander. Who is he?

Answer: Andy Symonds

The main reason for his inclusion in the squad was due to captain Ricky Ponting's recommendation, despite Symonds' poor form leading up to the Cup. He did his captain proud with a first-up 143 from 125 balls against Pakistan when Australia were in trouble.
10. Who missed the first match because he had a carry-over week from his 5 week suspension, for racial abuse against one of the Sri Lankans in the VB Series?

Answer: Darren Lehmann

Lehmann is a leftie and can bowl a slow left arm orthodox. For three years he won the Australian Domestic Cricketer of the Year title, playing for South Australia.
11. The following player is a New South Welshman who first picked up the bat against Namibia.

Answer: Michael Bevan

He is a left hander who missed the first match against Pakistan through injury.
12. This Queenslander broke the record in ODIs for the man most picked at 12th man. He is a right arm pace bowler.

Answer: Andy Bichel

A bit of an unfortunate record to hold - but it just goes to show how much depth the Australian team has, becuase he is a brilliant player who always puts in 110%.
13. Which South Australian would quite often open the bowling with Glenn McGrath?

Answer: Jason Gillespie

Unfortunately he missed a couple of matches through an ankle problem, but he was wonderful in the matches he did play in, especially in the first one against Pakistan. After his achilles injury he was replaced by Nathan Bracken (who didn't end up playing a game).
14. Shane Watson was picked in the squad but withdrew due to injury. Who was the replacement for the all-rounder?

Answer: Ian Harvey

The Victorian all-rounder took three wickets in his first match.
15. Shane Warne was also picked in the team, but was suspensed for a year for use of diuretics. Who was his 21-year-old replacement?

Answer: Nathan Hauritz

The Queenslander bowls a right off break. He didn't play a match at the Cup. Thanks for doing my quiz, and congratulations to the Aussies for defending their Cup title while being undefeated!
