Answer: Harvey Haddix

May 26, 1959, saw a game between the hard hitting Milwaukee Braves, and the arm of Pittsburgh Pirate Harvey Haddux. Braves Joe Adcock spoiled the no-hitter in the 13th inning, by hitting a double which scored the winning run by Hank Aaron. Aaron spoiled the perfect game by getting on base prior. Haddux was never credited with a perfect game although he reached nine full innings.
2. Who was the first pitcher in history to throw four no-hitters?

Answer: Sandy Koufax

Koufax of the Dodgers threw them from 1962-1965, with the latter being a perfect game against the Cubs. Ryan threw a total of seven no-hitters in his career. The first player to ever throw three was Bob Feller of the Indians in 1940, 1946, and 1951.
3. Which former Minnesota Twin was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2001?

Answer: Kirby Puckett

4. Who had the longest hitting streak in the National League, during the 20th century?

Answer: Pete Rose

Rose hit for 44 games in 1978 with the Reds. He was finally stopped by the Atlanta Braves' Larry McWilliams and Gene Garber. Rose tied Willie Keeler's 44 game streak hit in 1897, with his National League Baltimore Orioles.
5. Which batter after hitting his 100th career home run, ran backwards between the bases?

Answer: Jimmy Piersall

In 1963, New York Met Piersall hit his 100th against the Phillies. This was the first and last time this ever happened in the Majors. The League front office was so upset by this, that they implemented a new rule that makes players face the bases as they pass them.
6. How many games did 2003 World Series MVP Josh Beckett win during the regular season?

Answer: 9

Beckett only went 9-8 during the regular season, before going 1-1 in the Series along with 19 strikeouts. Of the Marlins five man rotation, Beckett won the fewest games behind Brad Penny, Mark Redman, and Dontrelle Willis, who all won 14 games, and Carl Pavano who won 12.
7. Which pitcher was the first in history to win a game without throwing a pitch?

Answer: Nick Altrock

The others were not pitchers. In 1906, Altrock of the White Sox entered a game in the ninth inning with the Sox trailing by one run. Before throwing his first pitch, he picked off the runner at first base to end the inning. The White Sox scored two in the bottom of the ninth to win the game.
8. Which of the following did not win baseball's Triple Crown Award?

Answer: Joe DiMaggio

The Triple Crown Award began in 1878, and the first winner was Paul Hines of Providence. The others listed all won their Triple Crown in the American League. Answer: Roger Clemens

Clemens set an American League record, and began his streak as a Toronto Blue Jay in 1998, and continued it as a Yankee in 1999. In '98 he went 20-6, then 14-10 as a Yankee. Carl Hubbell set a National League record in 1936 and 1937, by winning 24 consecutive games.
10. Who was the first player in history to win a MVP and a Cy Young Award in the same season?

Answer: Don Newcombe

The Cy Young Award did not begin until 1956, and the others listed played the game many decades earlier. Newcombe of the Dodgers, won the MVP and the Cy in 1956 for his 27-7 record with Brooklyn. He beat out 1956 Indian/Dodger Sal Maglie in both awards.
