Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is given to a player for a very serious personal foul on an opponent?

Answer: Red Card

Red Cards can be thrown down by the center referee. When a player is red carded, another player may not go into the game in place of that player.
2. What is it called when a player, without the ball on the offensive team is behind the last defender, or fullback?

Answer: Offside

In the U.S. you do not play using offsides until you turn nine. Most referees will not call it unless they are informed of the play. A free kick results from the location where the foul occurred.
3. Is there only one size of soccer ball?

Answer: No

Younger kids use a size 3 ball. Middle schoolers use a size 4, and the older players use a size 5.
4. When your coach tells you to go into the game, where do you go?

Answer: Midfield Line

The center line is usually located between the two benches. Sometimes there will be one bench on one side of the line, and the other across the field.
5. What happens when the defense kicks the ball behind their goal?

Answer: Corner Kick

Corner kicks are taken from an arch-like line on the "corners" of the fields. A flag marks every arch.
6. What color jerseys did the United States have the Women's National team wear in 2007?

Answer: Gold

Some past members of the U.S. Women's team are Mia Hamm, Michelle Akers, and Abby Wambach. The team even has medaled in the Olympics.
7. The goal keeper is the only one allowed to put their hands on the ball during a game. They wear what for protection?

Answer: Gloves

Punting it is when you drop the ball but kick it up and down the field before it touches the ground. You most often use your instep or laces to punt.
8. What does "Man On" mean?

Answer: A defender is near

Man on means that a defender is coming for the ball. When you hear man on, you can either pass the ball, use some of your moves, or head for the goal.
9. What are names for the main positions?

Answer: midfielder, forward, defender, and goalkeeper

Forward is the player that starts off with the ball. Midfielders are there to assist with scoring. Defenders are the last line of defence in front of the keeper. They protect the keeper who guards the goal.
10. What is called when a player deliberately touches the ball with any part of their arm?

Answer: Hand Ball

Handballs can be called at any time during the game. They cannot be called if a player is protecting themselves or not purposely touching the ball.
