Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which boxer, sentenced in 2006 to 160 years in prison without parole for armed robbery, carjacking and the attempted murder of a police officer, was knocked out in just 49 seconds by Mike Tyson in 2003?

Answer: Clifford Etienne

Etienne is no stranger to the big house, having taken up boxing while serving ten years of a 40 year sentence for attempted armed robbery. He was paroled in 1998, and fought his first professional bout in December that year. His career record stands at 29 wins, four losses and two draws.

In 2013, due to a technicality, his sentence was reduced from 160 years to 105, but even with this reduction he is unlikely to fight professionally again.
2. Marc Cecillon represented his country 46 times between 1988 and 1995, captaining them five times during that period. Which sport had he retired from when he murdered his wife in 2004?

Answer: Rugby Union

Cecillon was a much respected number 8 for club side Bourgoin-Jallieu and a member of the French national side that finished third in the 1995 rugby World Cup. After getting drunk and being asked to leave a party in 2004, he returned with a gun and shot his wife five times in front of 60 witnesses.

At his trial he stated that he hadn't meant to kill her but was sentenced to 20 years, of which he served 44 months.
3. Following his retirement in 1979 defence man and enforcer Steve Durbano served seven years for trying to smuggle a half million dollars worth of cocaine into Canada in 1983. With which team did he start and end his NHL playing career?

Answer: St. Louis Blues

Durbano was certainly a fiery character. In just 220 NHL games he amassed 1127 penalty minutes. In 1978, while playing for Birmingham Bulls of the World Hockey Association, he was banned for 12 games and dubbed "too violent for hockey", which for 70s hockey was quite an accolade.

After his release from prison, he was arrested for shoplifting and in 1995, returned to prison for running a prostitution ring. Durbano died in 2002.
4. Boxer Mike Tyson served three years of his six year sentence for raping a beauty queen, returning to the ring in August 1995. Who did he fight in his first bout after incarceration?

Answer: Peter McNeeley

McNeeley's pre-fight record of 36 wins and a solitary loss, compared favourably to Tyson's record of 41 wins and one loss, especially so, considering that Tyson had spent four years away from the ring due to his trial and stay in the big house. However, on the night, it wasn't so favourable as Tyson knocked McNeeley down after just ten seconds.

Another 79 seconds into the fight, McNeeley was down again, and fearing a humiliating beating, his manager stepped into the ring, causing McNeeley's automatic disqualification.
5. Which jockey, a master of flat racing, rode his first winner in 1948 aged 12, his last winner in 1995 aged 59 and still found time to serve a year at Her Majesty's pleasure for tax fraud in the mid-80s?

Answer: Lester Piggott

Piggott was known by several nicknames during his career, including "The Long Fellow" as a reference to his non jockey like height of 5 feet 8 inches, "The Housewives Favourite" due to the number of housewives that would place a bet on a sport they knew nothing about, purely because Piggott was riding and "The Master" in reference to his incredible number of wins.

As a result of his 1985 conviction, he was stripped of his OBE which had been awarded by Queen Elizabeth II in 1975.
6. South African Silvino Francisco was sentenced to three years in prison in 1997 for cannabis smuggling. In 1985 he had beaten Canadian Kirk Stevens to become the first winner of the British Open in which sport?

Answer: Snooker

Francisco beat Stevens 12-9 and after the event, accused Stevens of playing under the influence of drugs, an accusation which resulted in Francisco receiving a financial penalty and being docked world ranking points. Stevens later admitted the allegations were true and confessed to a drugs problem, meaning the decision against Francisco was reversed.
7. In 1980, former soccer star Peter Storey was sentenced to three years' jail time for conspiracy to produce counterfeit money. With which club did he win the double (F.A. Cup and League Champions) in the 1970-71 season?

Answer: Arsenal

Storey's story would be comical if it wasn't for the jail time. Upon retirement he invested in a pub which lost money heavily. In order to bolster his finances, he agreed to store equipment for a local gang who were making counterfeit money. He was arrested for this, and while on bail, bizarrely set up a brothel to attempt to raise enough money to allow him to flee to Spain.

He was arrested for this and received a six month suspended sentence and a large fine. He declared bankruptcy and was briefly jailed for failing to turn up to his own bankruptcy hearing before the case that had started the ball rolling came to court and he received his three years detention.
8. Cyclist Jacques "Jonathan" Boyer hit the headlines when he served a year in the big house in 2002, for lewd behaviour with a minor. However 21 years previously in 1981 he hit the headlines when he became the first American to do what?

Answer: Compete In The Tour de France

Boyer competed in the 1981 Tour de France, wearing a stars and stripes cycling jersey which attracted a huge amount of publicity for him personally and the tour as a whole. He went on to compete in the tour five times, his best result being 12th in 1983.
9. In 1999, Arsenal paid £2 million to sign this 15 year old from Notts County. By 2005 he was playing for Birmingham City whilst wearing an electronic tag after being released from prison early. Who was this soccer superstar?

Answer: Jermaine Pennant

Pennant was certainly a talented player but was beset with off field disciplinary problems. His career saw successful spells at Leeds United, Liverpool and Stoke City as well as an not so successful time at Real Zaragoza in Spain. He also represented the England under 21 side a total of 24 times but has been arrested on more than one occasion for drink driving, one instance of which, combined with driving while disqualified and being uninsured led to a three month prison sentence, of which he served 30 days but was tagged for the remaining 60 days.
10. Name the defensive tackle, signed by NFL teams such as Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Indianapolis Colts and Arizona Cardinals who, in 2012 was sentenced to 234 years and eight months in prison for a variety of offences.

Answer: Keith Wright

Wright never actually made the grade in NFL, being signed by seven teams as a member of their off season or practice squads. He did make the grade as a criminal though, being sentenced for a total of 19 offences including home invasion, armed robbery, kidnapping, forced oral copulation, first degree burglary, and false imprisonment.
