Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Devonshire Park in Eastbourne is the venue for an annual tournament in which sport?

Answer: Tennis

Devonshire Park is a tennis complex in the Sussex seaside resort of Eastbourne. It has been the venue for a Wimbledon warm-up event for women since 1974. The ATP began including it as part of the men's tour in 2009. Famous winners of this event include Chris Evert, Virginia Wade, Justine Henin and Martina Navratilova, who triumphed there on no fewer than 11 occasions.
2. A visit to Langtree Park in St Helens or Halliwell Jones Stadium in Warrington would mean you would most likely be watching which sport?

Answer: Rugby League

Rugby League's stronghold is in the traditional northern English counties of Lancashire and Yorkshire. St Helens Saints moved into Langtree Park in 2011 whilst Warrington Wolves opened Halliwell Jones Stadium in 2004. Both are Rugby League specific venues, unlike the DW Stadium in Wigan and John Smith's Stadium in Huddersfield which are also used for soccer.
3. Which one of these golf courses did not host the (British) Open Championship during the 20th century?

Answer: Wentworth

The Open Championship, the oldest of golf's four men's majors, is traditionally held on a seaside links style course. Wentworth, in Surrey, is an inland parkland course, so has never been on the Open rota; it has however been the site of many other prestigious tournaments, such as the British PGA Championship and the World Matchplay Championship.
4. Which one of these horseracing courses is not the venue for one of the five English flat racing Classic races?

Answer: Cheltenham

The five English classics are the Derby and the Oaks, run at Epsom; the 1000 and 2000 Guineas, run at Newmarket; and the St Leger, which takes place at Doncaster. Cheltenham is a National Hunt course which doesn't host flat races, but is famous for an annual festival each March.
5. Which one of these cities hosted the Commonwealth Games twice during the 20th century?

Answer: Edinburgh

Edinburgh, the capital city of Scotland, was the host city of the Commonwealth Games in both 1970 and 1986. London hosted the event in 1934, Cardiff in 1958, and Manchester in 2002. Glasgow became the second Scottish city to be awarded the games when she was announced as the host for the 2014 event.
6. Which sport takes place at the SWALEC Stadium in Sophia Gardens, Cardiff?

Answer: Cricket

The SWALEC Stadium is home to Glamorgan County Cricket Club. In 2009, it became the first Welsh venue to host a "home" test match for the England national team. That game, against old rivals Australia, made the SWALEC Stadium the 100th different venue, worldwide, to host a test match.

It should be pointed out that although the team are referred to as "England", they are effectively a Great Britain team, with Scots and Welshmen not only having represented the team over the years, but also been selected as captain.
7. Which Belfast stadium is the traditional venue for home games of the Northern Ireland soccer team?

Answer: Windsor Park

Windsor Park, which opened in 1905, is the home of Linfield FC, and is used for all Northern Ireland home games as well as the Irish Cup Final.
The Oval is the home of Glentoran FC; Ravenhill Stadium is a rugby venue; and Casement Park is a Gaelic sports venue.
8. The Greenyards, in the small Scottish town of Melrose, is a historic venue in which sport?

Answer: Rugby Union

The Greenyards has been the home of Melrose RFC since 1877, and has hosted the famous Melrose Sevens event since 1883. This is the oldest sevens event in the world, having been invented by local butcher Ned Haig.
9. The Crucible Theatre has been home to the World Snooker Championship since 1977. In which British city would you find this iconic venue?

Answer: Sheffield

The Crucible opened in 1971 and staged the World Snooker Championship for the first time in 1977, when John Spencer defeated Cliff Thorburn in the final.
10. An Aird in Fort William, The Dell in Kingussie, and Mossfield Park in Oban are all venues for which quintessentially Scottish sport?

Answer: Shinty

Shinty has been played in the Scottish highlands for over 2000 years, with it's most famous trophy, the Camanachd Cup, first being contested in 1896. Gaelic Football and Hurling are both Irish sports, whilst Bandy is a Scandinavian sport similair to Ice Hockey.
