Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How many outs in an inning?

Answer: 6

A half an inning contains 3 outs - a full inning contains 6.
2. Assuming the pitcher commits no infractions on the mound, what is the minimum number of pitches he must throw to complete a half an inning?

Answer: 3

If three batters come to the plate, swing and connect with their first pitch, hitting into an out, the minimum number of pitches a pitcher must throw to complete a half an inning is 3 - recording 3 outs.
3. Once a base runner reaches 1st base, what is the minimum number of pitches a pitcher must throw before that runner can reach home safely?

Answer: 0

If he balks three times, the runner advances three bases and can score without the pitcher ever attempting a pitch home!
4. What is the maximum number of strikeouts a pitcher can record per game?

Answer: There is no limit

If the pitcher strikes out a batter and the catcher drops strike 3 an infinite amount of times, the runners can reach base safely if no one cannot throw them out at 1st. The pitcher records the strikeout, the runner reaches base safely, and no out is recorded. Therefore, technically, there is no limit of strikeouts a pitcher can record per game!
5. Can a pitcher be credited with throwing a complete game only pitching 8 innings?

Answer: Yes

A complete game doesn't mean a win for the pitcher. The home team has to pitch 9 innings, as they pitch the top of each inning. If the home team is leading by the bottom of the 9th, the game is over and the losing pitcher cannot pitch. He gets credited with an 8 inning complete game - For this to happen, the pitcher would have to be on the visiting, and losing, team.
6. Does the home team pitch the top of the innings?

Answer: Yes

The home team bats the bottom of the innings - they pitch the top of the innings.
7. If a game goes 9 full innings top and bottom, would that equal 54 outs?

Answer: Yes

9 innings times 6 outs per inning equals 54 outs. This will happened when the home team loses.
8. The pitcher throws a perfect game (in a 9 inning game) when he faces 27 batters and retires them all in order. However, is it possible for someone to throw a no hitter facing the same amount of batters?

Answer: Yes

If the pitcher walks the first batter he sees, then the next batter hits into a double play, it is possible; though he would have to retire the remaining batters in order to accomplish the feat. It would equal 27 batters faced, but would be a no hitter instead of a perfect game.
9. If the catcher makes an error, how is it noted on the scorecard?

Answer: E2

Each fielder has a number assigned to him. The catcher's fielding number is 2. Should he commit an error, it would be noted as 'E2' on the scorecard.
10. What does a 'double header' mean?

Answer: Two games played on the same day

Double headers are generally played because a previous game was cancelled, and had to be rescheduled.
