Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Danny Frisella, a pitcher for the Milwaukee Brewers, died from what incident near Phoenix in 1977?

Answer: Dune buggy crash

Frisella played part of 10 Major League seasons. His career record was 34 wins and 40 losses. As a member of the 1969 Miracle Mets, he pitched in three games. During what would be his final season of 1976, he won five and lost two for the Brewers.
2. Leo Koeneke, a Brooklyn Dodger outfielder was killed during an airplane flight in 1935. How did this happen?

Answer: He was beat to death with a fire extinguisher

Koeneke was released by the Brooklyn Dodgers because of his drinking. He was refused a seat on a commercial airplane to return home. He then hired a chartered flight. During the trip, Koeneke started interfering with the pilot. A scuffle broke out between Len and the pilot's assistant. According to pilot Joe Mulqueeny, he was forced to choose between all three of them dying in a crash, or subduing Koneke.

He then hit Koeneke with a fire extinguisher several times, resulting in his death. In 265 Major League games, Len Koeneke hit 22 homers and batted .297.
3. Which Red Sox pitcher was stabbed to death in Florida during a fight at a spring training fish fry?

Answer: Ed Morris

Ed Morris won 33 games between the 1928 and 1929 seasons. He then injured his shoulder in a brawl on an elevator in 1930. Prior to the 1932 season, he was stabbed to death during a fish fry prior to going to spring training. Mercury Morris was a member of the 17-0 Miami Dolphins in 1972-73. Oil Can Boyd was a zany Red Sox pitcher on the 1986 pennant winners. Smokey Joe Wood was an ace of the Babe Ruth-era Red Sox.
4. One of these Rookie of the Year second basemen was the first rookie to win a Golden Glove Award. After his next season, he died while piloting a private plane.

Answer: Ken Hubbs

Hubbs led all rookies in 1962 in games, hits, doubles, triples, and batting average. He also set records for his position in consecutive games and chances without an error. In order to overcome his fear of flying, he trained for and obtained a pilot's license.

While flying a friend to Utah, he crashed. Sizemore, Lefebvre, and Sax were also second basemen who won Rookie of the Year awards.
5. In 1969, I watched on television as this Pittsburgh Pirate threw a no-hitter against the New York Mets. Seven years later, he died in an automobile accident on his 29th birthday.

Answer: Bob Moose

Moose had his best season in 1969, going 14-3 for the Pirates, including his no-hitter. His career stats were 76 wins, 71 losses, and he was a member of the 1971 World Series Champions. Dock Ellis threw a no-hitter against the Padres in 1970, and years later claimed he was on LSD when that happened. Haddix threw a no-hitter for 12 innings against the Milwaukee Braves, before losing in the 13th on an error, intentional walk, and one hit. Bob Friend was a four-time All-Star for the Pirates.
6. Houston Astro pitcher Don Wilson was found dead in his garage. The official ruling was accidental death from carbon monoxide poisoning. Sadly, the accident also claimed the death of which of his family members?

Answer: His son

Unfortunately, Wilson's son also died. His wife and daughter were rushed to the hospital and survived the incident. His wife had a broken jaw. The cause was never explained.
7. The California Angels have had more than their share of active players meeting premature death. Of these, which was the only one not to die in an automobile accident?

Answer: Lyman Bostock

8. Which pitcher, who was at the heart of a Ladies Day "riot" in 1897, took his own life while on a barnstorming tour in 1903, just months after being named player-manager for the Detroit Tigers?

Answer: Win Mercer

Win, shorty after being named manager, took his own life by inhaling a gas in a hotel room.
9. Which of these players did not die as a result of cancer or leukemia?

Answer: Urban Shocker, Yankees

Shocker died of a heart attack. In 1927 he used his bonus to buy two mules, which he named Babe and Ruth in tribute to the man who hit 60 homers. The other three did die of form of cancer or another while being active players.
10. Which of these players was killed in an accident other than a plane crash?

Answer: Steve Olin
