Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. He was a pitcher for the Giants, Dodgers and Braves for 18 years, retiring in 1925. His nickname was Rube. What was his real name?

Answer: Richard Marquard

Marquard broke in with the New York Giants in 1908, was traded to the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1915, to the Reds in 1921, then to the Boston Braves in 1922. His lifetime record was 201 and 177.
2. What catcher/outfielder from the early 20th century was known as the Duke of Tralee?

Answer: Roger Bresnahan

Bresnahan was from Toledo, Ohio, and batted .279 for his career. He played for a number of teams, mainly the Giants, Cards, and Cubs from 1897 to 1915.
3. What first baseman got the odd nickname of "Crime Dog"?

Answer: Fred McGriff

McGriff debuted with the Toronto Blue Jays in 1986, and by the end of the 2001 campaign he had 448 homers and 1400 RBI. Someday people will try to figure out why he was called "Crime Dog," the way we look at some old-time players and ask "Why was this guy called 'Death to Flying Things'?" (nope, not Dave Winfield)and "Why was that guy called 'Babe Ruth's Legs'?" McGriff has nothing to do with crime, nor does he look or act like a dog.

But there was a TV commercial some years ago featuring a cartoon character called McGruff the Crime Dog, who "took a bite out of crime." So that's the arcane source of this weird nickname.
4. What pitcher was nicknamed "Rapid"?

Answer: Bob Feller

All of these guys were rapid, but maybe not as rapid as Hall of Famer Bob "Rapid Robert" Feller, who pitched for the Cleveland Indians for his whole career, from 1936 to 1956, minus wartime service. He won 266 games, lost 152 and sported a 3.45 lifetime ERA.
5. What infielder who played from 1915 to 1941 was called "Rajah"?

Answer: Rogers Hornsby

Rogers Hornsby was one of the greatest hitters in baseball history, for both average and power. He finished his career with 2930 hits, a BA of .358, 1584 RBI, and a .577 slugging average.
6. What first baseman of the 1950s, 60s, and 70s was known as the Baby Bull?

Answer: Orlando Cepeda

A fan favorite with 3 teams, the SF Giants, Cards, and Braves, Cepeda's size and strength suggested a bull. He was also nicknamed Cha Cha. He came up with the Giants in 1958, became Rookie of the Year, went to the Cards in '66, where he won the 1967 MVP, was with the Braves from 1969 to '72, then finished up with the Red Sox and Royals. He totalled 379 homers and 1365 RBI.
7. Who played the outfield in the 1930s and 40s and was nicknamed "Ducky"?

Answer: Joe Medwick

Joe Medwick was a mainstay on the Cardinals' "Gas House Gang" in the '30s. He was also known as "Muscles." He played for the Dodgers from 1940 to 43, then finished up with the Giants, Red Sox, and the Cards again in 48.
8. What outfielder/first baseman of the 70s was called "The Stork"?

Answer: George Theodore

If you're not a Met fan, chances are you don't recall George, whose gangling, birdlike appearance got him this nickname. He played for the Shea Men in 1973 and '74 and compiled a .219 BA, which explains his short career. Not much of a player but very popular.
9. He pitched in the 1930s and got the colorful nickname of "Pretzels," or "Pretzel," depending on which source you want to believe. What was his name?

Answer: John Pezzulo

Actually, "Pretzel" Schmetzl would be a great name, but so was "Pretzels" Pezzulo. He pitched in 1935 and '36 for the Phils and won 3, lost 5 with a sparkling 6.36 ERA! Not much, but good enough for the inhabitants of Baker Bowl during the depression.
10. "The Dominican Dandy", was a pitcher in the 1960s and 70s. What was his name?

Answer: Juan Marichal

Juan Marichal started with the SF Giants in 1960, went to the Red Sox in '74, then finished with the Dodgers in 75. He was 243 and 142 with an ERA of 2.89. Source: baseball-reference.com
