Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which British boxer came to public attention when he won the silver medal in the lightweight division at the 2004 Olympics?

Answer: Amir Khan

Amir Khan was born in Bolton to a family of Pakistani origin. He was the only British boxer at the Athens Olympics, and caught the imagination of the public. Although aged only seventeen, he reached the final before losing to the much older and more experienced Cuban boxer, Mario Kindelan. Khan turned professional in 2005 and has held world championships in both lightweight and light welterweight divisions.

The other three names listed are all international cricketers.
2. Barry McGuigan was known by which nickname during his boxing career?

Answer: The Clones Cyclone

Barry McGuigan was born in the town of Clones in County Monaghan, which is in the Republic of Ireland but close to the border with Northern Ireland. He fought in the featherweight division and became WBA world champion in 1985 by defeating Eusebio Pedroza. 'The Hitman' was Ricky Hatton, and 'The Celtic Warrior' was Steve Collins. Carl Frampton, who was managed by McGuigan, was nicknamed 'The Jackal'.
3. Which former British boxing champion was known for his lisp and eccentric dress sense?

Answer: Chris Eubank

Chris Eubank was born in London in 1996 and began boxing following a move to New York when he was aged sixteen. He became WBC world champion at middleweight in 1990 and added the WBO title at the same weight later the same year. Having moved up to super middleweight, he became WBO world champion in 1991. Eubank adopted a fake upper class accent, dressed in riding clothes and wore a monocle in his eye thus creating an image which made him well known outside the boxing world.
4. Which former English cricketer made his boxing debut in 2012 in the heavyweight division?

Answer: Andrew Flintoff

Having retired from cricket in 2009, Andrew 'Freddie' Flintoff has tried his hand at various other ventures. He became a team captain on the sports based quiz show 'A League of their Own' and has also commentated on darts matches. Flintoff fought the American Richard Dawson in a four round match in November 2012 and won a narrow points victory.

He has indicated that he is unlikely to continue his boxing career.
5. Although he represented Canada at the 1988 Olympic Games, Lennox Lewis was actually born in London.

Answer: True

Lennox was born in West Ham in 1965 and moved to Canada when he was aged twelve. He excelled in several sports, but chose boxing to pursue. He represented Canada at the Los Angeles Olympics in 1984, losing in the quarter finals to the eventual winner. Having won the gold medal four years later at the Seoul Olympics, Lewis turned professional and returned to England to claim British nationality.

He became an undisputed world heavyweight champion, recognised as such by each of the various boxing bodies. Among his victims are Oliver McCall, Evander Holyfield, Mike Tyson and Vitaly Klitschko.
6. The 2012 Olympics saw women's boxing included for the first time. Who won the gold medal for Britain?

Answer: Nicola Adams

Nicola began boxing at the age of thirteen, although it took some time to establish her career after this early start. She won silver medals at both the European and Gold Amateur Championships before taking gold at her home Olympics in London. Nicola defeated the woman ranked number one in the world, the Chinese Ren Cancan, in the final.

The other ladies listed are all gold medal winners from the 2012 Olympics. Jessica Ennis won the heptathlon, Katherine Grainger won rowing gold and Laura Trott won a gold medal in cycling.
7. Former lightweight boxing champion Ken Buchanan was born in which country of the UK?

Answer: Scotland

Ken Buchanan was born in Edinburgh in 1945. He won the WBA lightweight world championship in 1970, before claiming the WBC version in 1971 to become undisputed world champion. Buchanan lost his WBA title in a controversial fight against Roberto Duran in 1972.

He retired in 1976 for two years, making a comeback two years later which never reached the heights of his previous successes. Buchanan retired for good in 1982.
8. Which British heavyweight boxing champion was almost as well known for his expression 'now what I mean 'arry?' as for his boxing ability?

Answer: Frank Bruno

Bruno was born in London in 1961 and turned professional in 1982. He became WBC world champion in 1995, when he won on points over Oliver McCall. Bruno's first defence of his title became his last professional fight, when he lost to Mike Tyson in 1996. On his retirement from boxing, Bruno pursued a career in entertainment, which included many appearances in pantomimes. Following his fights, he was regularly interviewed by the BBC boxing commentator Harry Carpenter, which led to the famous catchphrase quoted in the question.
9. British heavyweight boxing champion Henry Cooper famously floored which fighter in a 1963 bout?

Answer: Muhammad Ali

The fight was held at Wembley, and was not for a title. Cooper caught Cassius Clay, as he then was, near the end of the fourth round. Clay's trainer, Angelo Dundee, allegedly used smelling salts to help his boxer recover, in violation of boxing rules. Clay recovered in time to continue, and went on to win. Cooper fought him again, this time for the world championship, but lost once more.

Although he never became world champion, Cooper did hold the British, Commonwealth and European titles. In 2000, he became the first boxer to receive a knighthood.
10. 'The Dark Destroyer' was the nickname of which former British world boxing champion?

Answer: Nigel Benn

Nigel Benn was born in Essex and is a cousin to the former English international soccer player, Paul Ince. Benn won the WBO middleweight world championship in 1990, losing the title to Chris Eubank later that year. He then won the WBC super middleweight world championship in 1992, making several successful defences of the title before losing to Thulani Malinga of South Africa in 1996. Benn retired later the same year.
