Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Wilt Chamberlain to the Lakers! Which NBA team was foolish enough to sign off on giving away one of the best players in NBA history while he was in the prime of his career?

Answer: Philadelphia

Wilt Chamberlain left the 76ers little choice, he demanded, not only a trade but specifically to the Lakers, or he was going to retire and sign with the rival ABA. In return they got Darrall Imhoff, Archie Clark, and Jerry Chambers.
2. In 1980 the Cleveland Cavaliers traded away their eventual first round draft pick. Where in the draft did that pick end up being?

Answer: 1st overall

The Cavs traded what turned out to be the number 1 pick in the draft for a guy who averaged less than 3 points per game in his career. They picked up Don Ford, a role player at best, and lost out on the chance to draft James Worthy.
3. Ignoring the fact that Dirk Nowitzki was involved, which team made a bad deal sending Pat Garrity to Dallas for Robert Traylor?

Answer: Milwaukee

Robert "Tractor" Traylor, who started less than 100 career games and was out of the league in just a handful of seasons was traded for both Pat Garrity and Dirk Nowitzki during the 1998 draft. Nowitzki went on to become one of the best players in league history, and Garrity played 10 seasons in the league as a productive role player.

He never played for Dallas though. In the same off season he was part of a trade that brougt Steve Nash from Phoenix to Dallas.
4. Which 28-year-old veteran Center was traded straight up for Kobe Bryant during the 1996 draft?

Answer: Vlade Divac

The Hornets drafted Bryant with the 13th overall pick in the first round straight out of high school. Divac had already played 8 seasons in the league, and it turned out to be his most productive seasons were behind him. To make matters worse, Divac played just two seasons in Charlotte before a stint in Sacramento and eventually a return to the Lakers.
5. With one of the most deadly shots in league history, termed the "Skyhook", who was traded by the Bucks to the Lakers prior to the 1975-76 season?

Answer: Kareem Abdul-Jabbar

Kareem was the most dominating player in the league and had already won the league MVP award when the Bucks shipped him and Walt Wesley to the Lakers in exchange for Elmore Smith, Brian Winters, David Meyers, and Junior Bridgeman. Abdul-Jabbar went on to become the league's career scoring leader and five championships with the Lakers.

The Bucks didn't win another ship for the rest of the 20th century.
6. He won six NBA Championships, and was named one of the 50 greatest players to ever play in the league. Who was it though that was drafted by Seattle and quickly traded to Chicago in 1987?

Answer: Scottie Pippen

Pippen was traded straight up for Polynice who only played three seasons and started just 7 games for the Sonics before leaving town. He had one of the best careers in NBA history, playing a total of 12 seasons with the Bulls and eventually being inducted into the hall of fame. Both players retired in 2004.
7. Which team was the first to trade away Charles Barkley, doing so the year before he won the league MVP award?

Answer: 76ers

The 76ers traded "Sir" Charles away because he was demanding it, unfortunately for them, because of the demand, they got little in return. Barkley went to Phoenix and led the Suns to the NBA finals in his first season there in 1992-93. The 76ers got three players, Jeff Hornacek, Andrew Lang and Tim Perry in return for Barkley.
8. Robert Parish and Kevin McHale were destined to be teammates on the Warriors, but instead they were shipped to what tea-loving town for a pair of draft picks?

Answer: Boston

Parish was a veteran and McHale himself a rookie when the deal went down. Had the draft picks the Warriors made panned out the deal might not appear so bad. but it didn't work out well for them. Boston teamed Parrish with McHale, Larry Bird and several other stars and won four championships in the 1980s, while the Warriors spent the decade near the bottom of the standings.
9. Though they didn't know it at the time, which team accidently traded away Magic Johnson when they snagged Gail Goodrich from the Lakers?

Answer: Jazz

Among the teams on the list, only the Jazz existed at the time. Goodrich was a restricted free agent. That mean the Jazz had to agree to a trade of sorts in order to legally sign him. They sent role players Kenny Carr, Freeman Williams, and Sam Worthen along with the agreement to send over their first round pick the next season.

The Jazz played poorly and earned the first overall pick, which went to the Lakers and was used to take Magic Johnson. The Lakers went on to win five championships with Johnson at the helm.
10. Ed Macauley and Cliff Hagan scored more than 25,000 points combined for their career. The player the duo was traded for then had to be a massive star to make this a poor trade for the Hawks. Who was shipped out of town to make room for the pair?

Answer: Bill Russell

Bill Russell had been drafted by the St. Louis Hawks with the number 2 overall pick in 1956. The Hawks then managed to "steal" Ed Macauley and Cliff Hagan from the Celtics, or so they thought. Russell went on to change the game, becoming the most dominant player in the league for more than a decade.

He played 13 seasons in Boston and won 11 championships during that time. He was a 12 time all-star as well. The only season Russell wasn't an all-star was his rookie year. He sat out until December so that he could play in the 1956 Olympics, which caused him to miss out on being an all-star that season.
