The others listed never appeared in the WS in the '80s. The Phillies behind Mike Schmidt, defeated the Kansas City Royals 4 games to 2. Schmidt was the Series MVP.

On June 12 the strike began, suspending the season for 50 days.

The others retired long before the 1980s. Youngblood of the New York Mets had 2 hits in a day game on August 4th. The team traded him after the game to the Montreal Expos, and off to Philadelphia he went. As an Expo, he played the night game and had 2 hits off the Phillies. He began the 1983 season as a Giant, then retired as a Red in 1989 after 14 seasons.
4. What Red Sox slugger set a Major League in 1984, by grounding into 36 double plays in the season?

Answer: Jim Rice

The others never played for the Red Sox, and retired well before 1980. Rice had this dubious honor in his 11th season with the Red Sox. He still smacked 28 home runs in the season. He retired after 16 seasons with the Boston club in 1989.
5. Who was the first pitcher in history to strikeout 100 batters in a season for 20 consecutive seasons, and never win a strikeout crown?

Answer: Don Sutton

The others were not pitchers. Sutton did this in 1985 when he finished the season with the Angels. Don pitched for 23 seasons, mostly as a Dodger, and retired in 1988 with 324 career wins. He was a 20-game winner only once.
6. In 1988, who was the only baseball great that was inducted into the Hall of Fame?

Answer: Willie Stargell

The others listed were inducted in the 1930s. "Pops" was the Pirate leader from 1962-1982. Stargell blasted out 475 home runs in 21 seasons for Pittsburgh. Not known for his speed, he stole 17 bases throughout his entire career.
7. What pitcher in 1986, set a Major League record by dishing up 50 home runs in the season?

Answer: Bert Blyleven

The others were not pitchers. Blyleven broke Robin Roberts' record of 46. This Twins pitcher still went 17-14 for the season. In 22 seasons, Bert won 287 games and gave up an amazing 430 home runs.

Answer: Greg and Mike Maddux

Greg and brother Mike were rookies in 1986. Greg of the Chicago Cubs and Mike of the Philadelphia, faced each other on September 29. Greg defeated brother Mike and the Phillies 8-3.
9. What rookie catcher in 1987, set a Major League record by hitting safely in 34 straight games?

Answer: Benito Santiago

The others were not catchers. Santiago of the Padres set this record, which helped him win Rookie of the Year honors. 2003 saw Benito in his 18th season, this one in a Giant uniform.
10. What American League manager, won the first Manager of the Year Award in the 1980s?

Answer: Tony LaRussa

The other managers were not in baseball in the 1980s. LaRussa won the award with the Chicago White Sox, for leading the team to a 99-63 record and the American League Western Division crown. He won the award in 1988 and 1992 with the Athletics, and then won another in 2002, while being at the helm of the St.Louis Cardinals.
