Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who was the first left-handed pitcher to strike out 4000 batters in their career?

Answer: Steve Carlton

Although the others listed were all right-handed, none of them were pitchers. Beginning his career in 1965, Carlton played seven seasons with the Cardinals before playing for 15 as a Phillie. He retired in 1988 after 24 seasons with 4136 strikeouts. The first pitcher in history to strike out 4000 was the great Nolan Ryan, who retired with 5714.
2. In 1999, St. Louis Cardinal Fernando Tatis entered the record books for doing which of the following?

Answer: Hitting two grand slams in one inning

April 23 saw this third baseman hit two of his 34 season home runs against the Dodgers in the third inning. The Cardinals won 12-5, scoring 12 runs on 11 hits.
3. The 20th century started off sour for this pitcher who set a record for hitting 41 batters in 1900, and watched that record stand throughout the entire century. Who was he?

Answer: Joe McGinnity

The others weren't even born for at least another 20 years. McGinnity of Brooklyn Superbas (later Dodgers) was in his second professional season. It was his last season in Brooklyn as he later played for seven seasons with the New York Giants. Although he hit 41 batters in 1900, he also threw a 28-8 record for the NL pennant winning team in the season.
4. Which pitcher retired with a dismal batting average of .097?

Answer: Sandy Koufax

The others were not pitchers. Koufax, a historical name in itself, played for 12 seasons with the Dodgers from 1955-1966. His pitching arm was well documented but his bat was never talked about. In 776 at-bats, he struck out 386 times.
5. The Houston Astrodome hosted the first indoor all-star game in 1968. Which National Leaguer drove in the winning run?

Answer: Willie McCovey

The others were all American League players. McCovey was in his third of six career all-star games. His grounding into a double-play watched the game's only run score, and the first all-star game resulting in a 1-0 finish.
6. Which of the following greats appeared in 14 World Series in their career?

Answer: Yogi Berra

Both Young and Ryan went to only one World Series in their entire career, and Banks of the Cubs never saw World Series action. From 1947-1963, Berra went to an amazing 14 series, all with the Yankees. He won 10 of the 14. Yogi also had 12 World Series home runs to his credit.
7. Only one third baseman in the first 100 years of the Major Leagues was able to take four batting titles. Who was it?

Answer: Bill Madlock

The others were all pitchers. Madlock won two crowns with the Cubs in 1975 and 1976, then after going to Pittsburgh, won two as a Pirate in 1981 and 1983. Amazingly, Madlock was an all-star only three times in his 15-season career. He retired in 1987.
8. Which of the following wore the uniforms of all four New York Major League teams in their career?

Answer: Casey Stengel

The others were one-team career players. Stengel was first seen in a Brooklyn uniform from 1912-1917, then a New York Giant from 1921-1923. As a manager in New York from 1949-1960, Casey saw 10 World Series with the Yankees. With an absolute turnaround, he finished his career off managing the Mets from 1962-1965.
9. Who was the first player in history to hit 400 home runs and steal 400 bases?

Answer: Barry Bonds

The others never stole 10 bases in their career. Bonds reached both milestones in 1998 with the San Francisco Giants. Barry played his first seven seasons with the Pittsburgh Pirates before signing as a free agent with the Giants.
10. Home plate umpire Babe Pinelli called which pitcher's World Series perfect game?

Answer: Don Larsen

The only World Series perfect game in the first 100 years of Major League baseball occurred on October 8, 1956, which the Yankees won game five by a score of 2-0. The Yankees won the series four games to three against the Dodgers.
