Mark Webber was surprisingly fastest in a wet Friday qualifying session, setting a time of 1:23.111. Rubens Barrichello was 2nd (1:23.249), Kimi Raikkonen was 3rd (1:24.607), David Coulthard was 4th (1:24.655) and Michael Schumacher was 5th (1:25.585).

Rubens Barrichello was fastest in Saturday qualifying, setting a time of 1:13.807, David Coulthard was 2nd (1:13.818), Mark Webber was 3rd (1:13.851), Kimi Raikkonen was 4th (1:13.866) and Jarno Trulli was 5th (1:13.953).

The race was stopped after 54 laps after Mark Webber lost control of his Jaguar on the start/finish straight and crashed heavily into the barriers. This brought out the yellow flags but Fernando Alonso failed to see them and crashed into the debris from Webber's damaged car, the Spaniard then crashed heavily which brought out the red flags and the race was stopped.

Jordan thought they had won the race as Giancarlo Fisichella was leading when the race was stopped but the final race result was taken from the lap before, which meant Kimi Raikkonen was 1st, Fisichella was 2nd, Fernando Alonso was 3rd (although he didn't appear on the podium after his crash which stopped the race), David Coulthard was 4th, Heinz Harald Frentzen was 5th, Jacques Villeneuve was 6th, Mark Webber was 7th and Jarno Trulli was the last of the points scorers in 8th.

However, a week later the FIA looked at the race again and saw that Fisichella had started his 55th lap before the race was stopped which meant that Fisichella was the official winner.
