Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Birmingham City, Manchester City, and which other team was promoted to the Premier League for the 2002-03 season?

Answer: West Bromwich Albion

West Bromwich Albion finished in third place in Division One in the 2001-02 season. Although the team was releagted at the end of the 2002-03 season, many famous players, like Bobby Robson, Ronnie Allen, and Bryan Robson had played there in the past.
2. How many own goals did Sunderland score in their home match against Charlton Athletic in the 26th round of 2002-03 season?

Answer: 3

The match ended 3-1 to Charlton. Michael Proctor scored two own goals, and Stephen Wright added one after a bizarre shot, getting two deflections. Kevin Phillips scored from a penalty kick for Sunderland.
3. Who was relegated along with Sunderland and West Bromwich Albion?

Answer: West Ham United

West Ham had a few English international players, including David James, Joe Cole, and Michael Carrick. They, however, did not help the team to avoid their first relegation since 1992. West Ham were relegated unluckily, since in the last day they need a win but couldn't get it over the middle-placed Birmingham City (Bolton won on the last day to send West Ham down into the First Division).
4. Who did Lee Bowyer sign for when he changed clubs the winter transfer window in January 2003?

Answer: West Ham United

Lee Bowyer went to West Ham to help them avoid relegation, but could not help them, and moved to Newcastle after the season ended. Leeds were not very happy about selling him, but they did because of their financial crisis. Leeds also sold Rio Ferdinand, Jonathan Woodgate, and Robbie Keane.
5. Who scored the first goal for Arsenal against Manchester City in the game played at Maine Road?

Answer: Dennis Bergkamp

Arsenal won 5-1. The only goal for City was scored by Nicolas Anelka. The scorers for Arsenal were Dennis Bergkamp, Sol Cambpell, Thierry Henry, Robert Pires, and Patrick Vieira. With this early-spring win, Arsenal increased their lead over Manchester United, City's main rivals.
6. What was the aggregate score in the two matches played between Manchester United and Manchester City in the 2002-03 season?

Answer: 4-2 to City

City, signing Anelka and Fowler, had a marvelous team in the 2002-03 season. They could've qualified outright for European competition, but a few bad games at the end of the season deprived them of this privilege. They eventually qualified through the fair play route. City was one of the few teams to steal points from United twice this season.
7. Who scored his first goal for Arsenal, in the smashing 6-1 win against Southampton at Highbury, during the last weeks of the season?

Answer: Jermaine Pennant

Pennant scored a hat trick in just ten minutes, between 16th and 26th. These were the first goals for the youngster for Arsenal. David Seaman and Ryan Garry also played in the match but did not score. Silvinho did not participate at all.
8. Who scored the goals in the Merseyside derby played at Anfield?

Answer: There were no goals

In the nervous match between Liverpool and Everton, there were many yellow cards but not a single goal. With this draw, Liverpool continued their awful streak in the winter, which saw them collapse from first to seventh position. Liverpool could not recover and qualified only for the UEFA Cup, finishing fifth.
9. Who was the first manager fired in 2002-03 season?

Answer: Peter Reid

Peter Reid was fired in the late autumn after a two-promotions reign at the Stadium of Light. Soon after he was fired, Reid was hired by Leeds to help them stay in the league.
10. Where did Teddy Sheringham play during the 2002-03 season?

Answer: Tottenham Hotspur

Sheringham ended his second spell at Spurs, having spent five years there from 1992-1997. During 1998-2001, he played for Man Utd, helping them to win the 1999 Treble. Sheringham scored his 300th goal in the League in February 2003, but was not offered a new contract by Spurs at the end of the season, and signed for Portsmouth soon after.
