Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. After playing at various temporary grounds in their early years, which stadium did Falkirk move in to in 1885, remaining there until 2003?

Answer: Brockville Park

Falkirk made their Scottish League debut in 1902 with their first league game at Brockville being a 0-1 defeat against St Bernards on 23rd August of that year. The record attendance for a game at the stadium was 23,100 for a game against Celtic in 1953. Due to its dilapidated state, the ground was nicknamed "Brokenville" by opposition fans during its final years.

The last match there was a 2-3 defeat by Inverness Caledonian Thistle on 10th May 2003.
2. After changing their colours a few time in their early days, what has been the permanent shirt colour of Falkirk F.C. since 1915?

Answer: Navy Blue

Falkirk had already worn navy blue shirts sporadically in their early years. After a spell wearing royal blue shirts between 1909 and 1914, navy blue became their permanent shirt colour in 1915. Shorts have most commonly been white, with navy blue ones been worn in the occasional season.
3. What is the club nickname of Falkirk F.C.?

Answer: The Bairns

Falkirk share their nickname with that of the town, local people long being referred to as "bairns". The official motto of the town of Falkirk is "Better meddle wi' the de'il than the Bairns o' Fa'kirk"
4. Falkirk won their first major honour in 1913, defeating which team in the Scottish F.A. Cup final?

Answer: Raith Rovers

Falkirk had already shocked Celtic away from home in an earlier round, and defeated Hearts in the semi-finals to set up a meeting with Raith Rovers at Celtic Park in the final, on April 12th, 1913. Jimmy Robertson and Tom Logan scored Falkirk's goals in a 2-0 victory.
5. Falkirk broke the world transfer fee in 1922 when they paid £5,000 for which player from West Ham United?

Answer: Syd Puddefoot

Syd Puddefoot was a striker with West Ham whose goal-scoring exploits attracted the attention of numerous clubs. Falkirk fans helped raise the funds to secure his transfer for a world record of £5,000. He spent three years with the club, scoring 45 goals in 113 league appearances. He was sold to Blackburn Rovers for £4,000 in 1925.
6. Falkirk reached their first major cup final for 35 seasons in 1947-48 when they lost the League Cup final to which team?

Answer: East Fife

East Fife were in the second tier of Scottish football in 1947, so Falkirk started the final on 25th October 1947, as favourites. The game ended goalless, with the replay taking place on November 1st. East Fife made no mistake at the second attempt, recording a convincing 4-1 victory.
(35 years earlier they won the Scottish FA Cup final in 1913)
7. Falkirk landed another major trophy when they defeated which team to lift the 1957 Scottish F.A. Cup, defeating which team in the final?

Answer: Kilmarnock

In the semi-finals, Falkirk overcame Raith Rovers in a replay at Tynecastle, whilst Kilmarnock also needed a replay to see off Celtic. The final at Hampden also needed two games to settle it, the first match on April 25th finishing in a 1-1 draw. The replay, four days later, went to extra-time, with Doug Moran grabbing the winner in a 2-1 Falkirk victory.
8. Which Falkirk player made a record 14 international appearances for Scotland?

Answer: Alex Parker

Alex Parker, a full back, joined Falkirk as a teenager in 1952 and was part of their 1957 Scottish Cup-winning team. He won his first international cap against Portugal in 1955. He was sold to Everton in 1958.
9. In 2004, Falkirk moved into a brand new all-seater stadium. What was the rather unimaginative name of their new ground?

Answer: Falkirk Stadium

The Falkirk Stadium was funded by the football club and the local council. The first game there was a friendly match against Dundee, with Hamilton Academical being the opponents in the first league game on 14th August 2004. Falkirk celebrated their first season in their new home by winning promotion to the Premier League.
10. Falkirk made their European debut in the 2009-10 Europa League. It is a memory which won't linger long in the minds of their supporters as they exited at the first hurdle to a team from which small nation?

Answer: Liechtenstein

Falkirk qualified for European competition by virtue of losing the 2008-09 Scottish Cup final to Rangers, who had already qualified for the Champions League, having also won the Premier League title. Their continental debut was a disaster - after receiving a bye in the first qualifying round, they were drawn with FC Vaduz of Liechtenstein in the next round.

After winning the home leg 1-0 on July 16th, (Ryan Flynn scoring their historic first European goal), the return leg seven days later in the tiny Alpine country saw them go down 0-2 after extra-time to exit the tournament.
