Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The NBA granted four cities, including Charlotte, expansion franchises on April 22, 1987. Which of the following cities was NOT among those granted franchises on that date?

Answer: Toronto

The NBA directed that new franchises in Charlotte and Miami begin play during the 1988-89 season, and new franchises in Orlando and Minneapolis begin play during the 1989-90 season. The franchise in Toronto did not begin play until the 1995-96 season, along with the new franchise in Vancouver.
2. The Hornets played their first regular-season game on November 4, 1988. Which established Eastern Conference team handed the Hornets a 40 point loss that night?

Answer: Cleveland Cavaliers

Although the Atlanta Hawks would have been a natural for the fledging Hornets to open against, they wound up playing a veteran Cavs team that beat them 133-93. Ironically, one of the Hornets' future stars, long-range specialist and sixth man extraordinaire Dell Curry, was a cast-off from the Cavs.
3. The Hornets picked up their first win on November 8, 1988, against which Western Conference team?

Answer: Los Angeles Clippers

The perennial whipping boys of the NBA got stung in their very first visit to Charlotte, 117-105.
4. Which man served as the Hornets' first head coach?

Answer: Dick Harter

Known as a defensive wizard, Harter served two full seasons as the Hornets head coach. He was fired 40 games into the 1990-91 season, with the team sitting at 8-32. Since then, he has been an assistant with several NBA teams. Ron Rothstein served as Miami's first head coach; Matt Guokas was at the helm when Orlando debuted; and the late Bill Musselman guided Minnesota during its first campaign.
5. Which NBA veteran scored the very first points in Hornets history?

Answer: Kelly Tripucka

Rickey Green took the first shot in Hornets history, but it was longtime Detroit Piston Kelly Tripucka who gave the team its first points. Tripucka later became the first Hornet to cry in public, as he questioned the hearts of the fans during his second season.
6. The Hornets' first victory in the NBA Playoffs came against which Eastern Conference foe?

Answer: Boston Celtics

Finishing fifth in the Eastern Conference in the 1992-93 season, the Hornets drew the Boston Celtics in the first round of the NBA Playoffs. They picked up the victory in Game 2 of the best-of-five series, 99-98, in double-overtime in Boston. They won the series, but fell to the New York Knicks in the second round.
7. Who was the head coach of the Hornets when they made their first playoff appearance?

Answer: Allan Bristow

Bristow won 207 games as head coach of the Hornets. Before coaching the team, he was an assistant under Doug Moe at Denver, and played with Philadelphia and Dallas. Gene Littles was the Hornets second coach (and the first African-American to hold the poisition). Dave Cowens led the Hornets to back-to-back 50-plus win seasons. And Brian Hill, previously head coach of the Orlando Magic, was an assistant under Paul Silas.
8. Which Hornet was the first to win the NBA All-Star Game MVP Award?

Answer: Glen Rice

A versatile player with sweet shooting touch, Glen Rice set an All-Star Game record by scoring 20 points in a single quarter, the third quarter, as the East overcame a 22-point deficit to beat the West 132-120 in Cleveland. Center Jamaal Magloire was in line to be the MVP of the 2004 All-Star Game in Los Angeles, leading the East with 19 points, but the East fell to the West 136-132.
9. In 2002, the Hornets played their first game in New Orleans. Which team did they defeat 100-75 to start their tenure in the Big Easy?

Answer: Utah Jazz

The once and current NBA franchises representing New Orleans slugged it out on the floor of the Hornets' new home, New Orleans Arena.
10. Which team did the Hornets face in their first playoff appearance after moving to New Orleans?

Answer: Philadelphia 76ers

Though they fought hard and well, the Hornets fell to an old nemesis, the 76ers, 4-2 in the first round in 2003.
