Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Atlanta
Answer: Hawks
The Hawks are a professional basketball team in the NBA (National Basketball Association) located in Atlanta, Georgia. Their home games are played at Philips Arena. While the team was founded in 1946 as the Buffalo Bison, they did not move to Atlanta until 1968. One of the Hawks' greatest players, Dominique Wilkins, played for the franchise from 1982-1994, and had his #21 retired in 2001.
2. St. Louis
Answer: Cardinals
Most people, even if they are not sports fans, have heard of the baseball team the New York Yankees of Major League Baseball's American League who have compiled over 25 World Series victories. However, the 'winningest' team in MLB's National League has been the St. Louis Cardinals with over 10 World Series wins.
The Cardinals play their home games at Busch Stadium in St. Louis, Missouri. They were founded way back in 1882.
3. Pittsburgh
Answer: Penguins
The Pittsburgh Penguins are a National Hockey League founded in 1967. Prior to 1967, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania was home to two hockey franchises, i.e., the NHL Pirates (not to be confused with the baseball team) from 1925 to 1930 and the American Hockey League Hornets from 1936 to 1967. Former hockey great Mario Lemieux bought the team out of bankruptcy in 1999.
4. Baltimore
Answer: Ravens
Baltimore, Maryland seems to have a fondness for avian team names. They have a professional baseball team called the Orioles (not one of the matches) and the National Football League franchise, the Baltimore Ravens. The Ravens play their home games at M&T Bank Stadium and, for those of you who don't follow American football this may be confusing, they are part of the American Football Conference.
The team was established by Art Modell (1925-2012).
5. Anaheim
Answer: Ducks
In 1992 there was a movie about a kids hockey team called "The Mighty Ducks". The following year a professional hockey team owned by the Walt Disney Company was founded and called the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim (California). In 2005 the Disney Company sold the team and the name became the Anaheim Ducks.
While the team name is not one which would inspire fear in opponents, this expansion team has had a good deal of success, including a Stanley Cup win over the Ottawa Senators in the 2006-07 season.
6. Toronto
Answer: Blue Jays
Once upon a time, Canada had two Major League Baseball teams. The Montreal Expos moved to Washington D.C. in 2004, leaving only the Toronto Blue Jays to represent Canada. The Blue Jays became a professional American League in 1977. They were the first Canadian team to win the World Series, when they won back-to-back championships in both 1992 and 1993.
Their home arena is the Rogers Centre.
7. Philadelphia
Answer: Eagles
The Philadelphia, Pennsylvania professional football team was named after the American national bird, the eagle, despite the fact that Benjamin Franklin wanted that symbol to be the turkey (the Philadelphia Turkeys, I don't think so!). In the National Football League, the Eagles play in the National Football Conference.
They play at Lincoln Financial Field and their fight song is (appropriately) "Fly, Eagles, Fly". The team dates back to 1933.
8. Chicago
Answer: Blackhawks
One of the most successful hockey teams in the National Hockey League has been the Chicago Blackhawks, playing in Chicago, Illinois since May 1, 1926. They have Stanley Cup victories dating back to 1934 and continuing in 1938, 1961, 2010, 2013 and 2015.
They play on the ice at United Center and, until 1986, they were known as the Black Hawks. They are one of the original six NHL teams the others being the Red Wings, Canadiens, Maple Leafs, Bruins and Rangers.
9. Seattle
Answer: Seahawks
Joining the National Football League as an expansion team in 1976, the Seattle Seahawks are based in the state of Washington, with Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen as the owner. They play in the National Football Conference. Located in the Pacific Northwest, the Seahawks have fans as far away as Idaho, Alaska and British Columbia. Seattle fans are often called "the 12th Man" for creating the loudest noise at any sporting event, and have twice set a Guinness World Record.
10. New Orleans
Answer: Pelicans
Often misquoted, Dixon Lanier Merritt (NOT Ogden Nash) wrote the limerick: "A wonderful bird is the pelican/His bill will hold more than his belican". Well, the New Orleans, Louisiana professional basketball franchise (in the NBA) has honored this esteemed bird, by naming their team after it.
They are part of the Western Conference. Founded in 1988, they were formerly known as the Charlotte Hornets. They play home games at the Smoothie King Center and their mascot is (of course) Pierre the Pelican.
