Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was the nickname used by the Cleveland State Vikings, when they were still Fenn College?

Answer: Foxes

Their was really no rhyme or reason for the nickname "Foxes", other than the alliteration with Fenn, so when they became Cleveland State, they held one of those contests. Supposedly, the students of a high school with the nickname of "Vikings" stuffed the ballot boxes, and now they are so known.
2. Hofstra University is currently known as the Flying Dutchmen, but they are trying to employ more and more of which nickname?

Answer: Pride

Apparently the women's team prefer Pride, simply because it is awkward to refer to themselves as the Hofstra Flying Dutchwomen. It just doesn't sound right.
3. Before the Miami Redhawks, they were known by which nickname?

Answer: Redskins

For obvious reasons this nickname changed, but it is curious that the university consulted with the Miami tribe, before making the change and they approved of Redhawks.
4. According to Thor their mascot, Southern Utah University's teams were formerly known by which common nickname?

Answer: Broncos

Now known as the Thunderbirds. SUU changed even their school colors when they made the switch.
5. Which University changed its nickname from the "Colts" because a sportswriter thought their baseball pitcher, Puss Ellyson, threw like a particular animal?

Answer: Richmond

Puss threw like a spider according to the sportswriter, confusing and baffling hitters. Therefore the university slowly adopted Spiders and is the only university to do so.
6. Which of the following is not a nickname ever employed by Dartmouth's teams?

Answer: Archers

The most interesting of the nicknames is "Indians", because of the very successful American Indian program at Dartmouth, but in the early 1970s, the nickname was renounced because of the political environment of the times.
7. The Buffalo Bulls were formerly known by which nickname?

Answer: Bisons

The nickname was changed to Bulls in order to distance itself from the other teams (both professional and semi-professional) in the area.
8. Which university's teams were called the Cliffdwellers and the Webfoots before becoming the Pilots?

Answer: Portland

The students at Portland voted for the nickname "Chinooks", but the administration stepped in and installed "Pilots" despite the vote.
9. What was the first formal nickname of Santa Clara?

Answer: Broncos

Missionites, Prunepickers, and Friars, were all names used by competitors who were referring to Santa Clara, but Santa clara adopted Broncos as its one and only official nickname.
10. Were the teams at the University of Massachusetts known officially as anything but the Minutemen?

Answer: Yes

They were known as the Redmen like St. Johns in New York, but changed it in the early 1970s like many other institutions.
