Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Galatasaray v Fenerbahce

Answer: The Intercontinental Derby

Galatasaray and Fenerbahce are the biggest and most successful teams in Turkey, and form two of the so-called "big three" in Istanbul, alongside Besiktas. Although both have a significant rivalry with Besiktas, the rivalry with each other is one of the most intense anywhere in world football, and dates from a friendly match that the two teams played in 1934, which saw a hard-fought game erupt into fighting, first amongst the players before spilling over into rioting amongst the fans.

This has intensified over the years, to the point that hooliganism is now commonplace when the teams play each other.

The name of the rivalry, "Intercontinental Derby", stems from the fact that Istanbul is bisected by the Bosphorus Strait, which is seen as the dividing line between the European and Asian parts of Turkey - Galatasaray is located on the European side of the Bosphorus, while Fenerbahce is on the Asian side.
2. River Plate v Boca Juniors

Answer: Superclásico

River Plate and Boca Juniors are Argentina's two biggest and most successful clubs, and are among the most successful in all of South America. Both clubs trace their history to the Buenos Aires district of La Boca, which is the working class dockland area of the city.

However, in 1925, River Plate moved to the more affluent Nunez district, which led to the club gaining the nickname "Los Millionairos", as they supposedly attracted a new, upper-class fanbase, in contrast to the working class fans of Boca Juniors. Matches between the two teams are intense, both on and off the pitch, with fighting between the two sets of fans a regular occurrence, and attacks by fans on opposition players not unheard of.

The name of the rivalry, "Superclasico", comes from the Spanish use of 'clasico' to mean 'derby', with 'super' intended to show the statue of the two clubs when compared to others in Argentina.
3. Rangers v Celtic

Answer: The Old Firm

Rangers and Celtic are the most successful and most well-supported clubs in Scotland, having won more than 100 Scottish league titles between them. Their rivalry stems largely from the sectarian divide in Ireland, which was transplanted to the city of Glasgow via immigration in the 19th century. Rangers fans tend to trace their history to Ulster Scots, while Celtic supporters are historically descended from Irish-Scots, which translates into the two being viewed as on either side of the unionist-republican divide in Ireland (visualised in Rangers' fans tending to wave the British Union Flag, and Celtic's waving the Irish Tricolour).

The disorder that can occur at games between the two has led to the police insisting that games only be played in the early afternoon, while the Scottish football authorities have ensured that the possibility of a title decider between the two is avoided.

The origin of the name "Old Firm" is unclear - one explanation may come from the pair's first meeting in 1888, when commentators described them as "like two old, firm friends", while another may stem from a 1904 cartoon depicting an elderly man with a sandwich board reading "Patronise The Old Firm: Rangers, Celtic Ltd".
4. Wisla Krakow v Cracovia

Answer: The Holy War

Although neither are considered to be Poland's biggest team, Wisla Krakow and Cracovia are both among the country's oldest, with both having been formed in 1906, and playing their first game against each other two years later. The rivalry is considered to be the most intense in Poland, with fighting usually occurring between the two sets of supporters when the teams play each other (and also when they aren't playing), which has led to away fans being banned from games between the two.

The hooligan groups of the two clubs were among the few who did not sign up to the 2004 "Poznan Pact", in which groups agreed not to use weapons when fighting amongst each other.

The name "Holy War" was originally coined by Cracovia player Ludwik Gintel, and stems from the fact that Cracovia is traditionally seen as having a Jewish fanbase, while Wisla's fanbase is largely Christian.
5. Olympiakos v Panathinaikos

Answer: Derby of the Eternal Enemies

Olympiakos and Panathinaikos are Greece's two most successful and well-supported clubs. Panathinaikos is based in the Greek capital, Athens, while Olympiakos resides in the city of Piraeus, a port city located just five miles south-west of the city centre of Athens.

As with many significant rivalries, its origins can be traced back to original societal and cultural differences of the clubs and their formation. Panathinaikos's origins in Athens lead to them being seen as representing the high culture and elite of the capital, while Olympiakos, coming from the port city on the coast, is very much seen as the bastion of the working class, although today fans of the two clubs come from all areas of society.

The rivalry between the two has often spilled into violence before, during and after games between the two.

The name of the rivalry, "Derby of the Eternal Enemies", comes from their location in the Athens metropolitan area, with Athens and Piraeus having links going back to classical antiquity.

However, while this is the most used name for the rivalry, it has also come to be known as the "Mother of all Battles".
6. Steaua Bucharest v Dinamo Bucharest

Answer: The Eternal Derby

Steaua Bucharest and Dinamo Bucharest are Romania's most popular and most successful teams although, unlike some other major derby matches around the world, their rivalry only dates back to 1948, which is when both were founded. As with many communist countries, Romania's football clubs were branches of sports societies that were sponsored by government organisations. Steaua was founded as the Bucharest branch of the Army Sports Association in June 1947, while Dinamo came about through the merger of two existing Bucharest based clubs under the patronage of the government's Internal Affairs Ministry, with the first game between the two played in November 1948.

Although, in 2017, Steaua's name was changed to FCSB, as a result of the Ministry of National Defence suing the club over its right to the name, the rivalry between FCSB and Dinamo remains as fierce, with regular instances of hooliganism between the two clubs' fans.

The name of the rivalry, the "Eternal Derby", stems from the success the two teams have had in Romania, with neither having been relegated from the top division.
7. Club America v Club Universidad Nacional

Answer: Clasico Capitalino

Club America and Club Universidad Nacional (usually known as UNAM) are two of the most popular and successful clubs in Mexico, with a rivalry that dates back to the early 1960s. At the time, Club America were one of the country's leading clubs, while UNAM was promoted to the top division in 1962. UNAM's first match in the Primera División was against Club America, who won 2-0.

As with many other rivalries around the world, the antagonism between Club America and UNAM is largely societal, with América being seen as the club of the wealthy and powerful, while UNAM, which represents the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, sees itself as the club for intellectuals.

Although the rivalry between the two is fierce, it is seen as greater by supporters of UNAM, who regard América as their biggest rivals, with fans of América regarding matches against Chivas, a major club from the city of Guadalajara, as their most important.

The name of the rivalry stems from the use of the Spanish word "clásico", meaning "derby", and that the two clubs are both from Mexico City.
8. Sheffield United v Sheffield Wednesday

Answer: Steel City Derby

Sheffield United and Sheffield Wednesday are two of England's oldest clubs. While neither of them are among the most successful, both of them have seen success over their histories. The first game between the two was a friendly held in December 1890, which Wednesday won 2-1. One of the most famous games between the two came in 1993, when they met in the FA Cup semi-final at Wembley Stadium, a game that Wednesday won to reach the FA Cup Final. Unlike other rivalries however, trouble between fans is rare, largely as a result of the reduction in hooliganism in England since the 1980s.

The name comes from Sheffield's nickname, the "Steel City", as it was once the heart of steel production in England.
9. Al-Ahly v Zamalek

Answer: The Peak

Al-Ahly and Zamalek are the most popular and most successful clubs in Egypt, and have been named by the Confederation of African Football as Africa's top two clubs. Both located in Cairo, the rivalry between the two is among the most intense in world football, as they will usually both be challenging for the top honours in Egyptian football.

The two first met in a friendly match in 1917, which saw a 1-0 win for Al-Ahly. Since then, Al-Ahly has maintained the upper hand, having won the fixture almost twice as many times as Zamalek. Violence often breaks out between the supporters, with an infamous conflagration during the 1971-72 season, which led to the league being cancelled for the remainder of the campaign.

The nickname of the rivalry comes from the fact that the two clubs sit at the peak of football both nationally and across their confederation.
10. Lazio v AS Roma

Answer: Derby Capitolino

Lazio and AS Roma are two of Italy's major clubs, and the two most significant and popular in the nation's capital, Rome. While Lazio dates from 1900, Roma was only formed in 1927, and came about as a result of a merger between three existing clubs in an effort by Benito Mussolini to create an all-Roman club to challenge the then dominance of clubs in the north of the country. Lazio was the only Roman club to resist the merger, which led to an immediate rivalry between them and the new club. Today, the rivalry largely stems from political and cultural differences between the two sets of supporters, with fans of Lazio largely coming from the north of the city, which is more affluent, and tending to be more right-wing, while Roma's fans originate more in the poorer inner-city areas, and identify with the political left. Today matches between the two are especially intense, given that they share the same stadium, the Stadio Olimpico, with Lazio traditionally occupying the north end and Roma the south.

The name "Derby Capitolino" simply means "Capital Derby", and is also referred to as the "Derby della Capitale" (Derby of the Capital).
