Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In 1990 Hank Gathers was one of college basketball's biggest stars and his death during a conference tournament game was national news. For what fast-paced team did Hank Gathers play?

Answer: Loyola Marymount Lions

At 6'7" and 190 pounds, Gathers was strong enough to play inside and quick enough to lead LMU's fast-paced offense down the court. He was a national player of the year candidate and likely to be a lottery pick in the NBA draft.

In December, 1989 Gathers had collapsed during a home game and was diagnosed with exercise-induced ventricular tachycardia, which caused an irregular heartbeat. Doctors prescribed Inderal but Hank didn't like the drug's side effects and it was later reported that he'd begun skipping his dose on game days. On March 4, 1990 LMU was playing Portland in the second round of the West Coast Conference tournament. About 7-1/2 minutes into the game Gathers collapsed. Running back on defense he seemed to stumble and went to the floor on his back. Gathers tried to get up, but trainers kept him down and moments later he quit breathing. He was declared dead at a hospital a short time later. The game and the conference tournament were suspended, then cancelled, and LMU was given the WCC's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. Even without their star, the Lions advanced to the Final 8 round before losing to eventual champ UNLV.

An autopsy determined that Hank Gathers died at age 23 due to hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.
2. Spectators are more likely than riders to die during the Tour de France.

Answer: True

Cycling is a surprisingly dangerous sport for riders, officials and spectators. Four riders have died participating in the Tour de France since its inception in 1903. At least 16 other fatalities involving spectators, officials, and one journalist have occurred during the race.

Other cycling races have had their share of deadly incidents, too. During the 2016 Gent-Wevelgem race, Belgian cyclist Antoine Demoitié died after being hit by an official's motorbike . The next day another Belgian rider suffered a heart attack and died while competing in the Criterium International.
3. The death of Nodar Kumaritashvili cast a pall over the opening ceremony for the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics. In which dangerous winter sport did this Georgian athlete participate?

Answer: Luge

The 22 year old Kumaritashvili went off the track and struck a metal support during a practice run just hours before the opening ceremony. The original track configuration was extremely fast with an Austrian slider reaching 154 km/hr during practice. After Kumaritashvili's death the track was reconfigured to bring speeds down for the competition.

Luge became an Olympic event in 1964. The event got off to a bad start when a British luge racer died during a practice run at Innsbruck.
4. On October 24, 1971 Chuck Hughes became the first NFL player to die during a game. For which hard luck team did Hughes play?

Answer: Detroit Lions

Hughes was in his fifth season in the NFL, primarily as a special teams player. Coming late into the game against the Bears to replace an injured player, he caught only the 15th pass of his career. A few plays later while returning to the huddle Hughes clutched his chest and fell to the ground. Bears linebacker Dick Butkus signalled immediately for help from the bench. Team doctors and trainers worked to save his life while players, fans and a midwestern TV audience looked on. Taken to a hospital, Hughes was pronoounced dead. Autopsy results gave the cause of death as a heart attack.

The Lions joined the NFL in 1930. Following their last league championship in 1957 they've appeared in the playoffs several times but remain one of only four teams who have never appeared in the Super Bowl.
5. In November, 2014, Phillip Hughes, batting at 63 not out, attempted a hook shot, missed and was struck in the neck by the ball. He was hit just below the ear in a spot not protected by his helmet. Hughes underwent surgery but died two days later of a brain hemorrhage. What sport (which no living American understands) was Hughes playing?

Answer: Cricket

Hughes was an Australian Test and One Day International cricketer playing for South Australia. He died three days short of his 26th birthday.

There have been more deaths on the cricket pitch than you might think. Jasper Vinall of East Sussex was the sport's first known fatality in 1624. He was hit on the head by a batsman attempting to hit the ball a second time - against the rules now, but it might not have been in 1624. Between Vinall and Hughes several cricketers died when struck by the bat or the ball.
6. Serious baseball fans know that Ray Chapman is the only major league player to be killed by a pitch hitting him in the head. But do you know the pitcher who delivered the deadly pitch?

Answer: Carl Mays

Mays was a good but not a great pitcher. He pitched in the major leagues from 1915 to 1929. Mays was pitching for the Yankees on August 16, 1920 against the Cleveland Indians. In the fifth inning Mays threw at Chapman to 'brush him back' from the plate. The pitch hit Chapman in the head so hard that the crowd heard the impact. Chapman staggered a couple of times and fell. Surgery to repair a skull fracture wasn't successful and the Indians shortstop died 12 hours after being hit.

Mays was known to be a spitball pitcher and Chapman's death was a contributing reason for the banning of that pitch following the 1920 season.
7. In 2005 Becky Zerlentes became the first woman to die in the USA while participating in 'the sweet science'. What sport brought about her demise?

Answer: boxing

Zerlentes was a college professor and master of several martial arts disciplines. As a boxer she had won a regional Golden Gloves tournament. In 2005 she was participating in the Colorado State Boxing Senior Female Championships when she was knocked out and died without regaining consciousness.
8. A jockey at Belmont Park suffered a heart attack during a race and actually won the race after he died.

Answer: True

In 1923 Frank Hayes was 35 years old and had been around horses as a trainer and occasional jockey for most of his life. The owner of 'Sweet Kiss' approached him to ride the filly in a race at Belmont. Despite the fact that 'Sweet Kiss' was a 20-1 long shot and Hayes had never won a race she crossed the finish line in the lead.

When the owner and officials approached to offer congratulations they were shocked to find that the jockey was quite dead. The post race weigh-in was waived and 'Sweet Kiss' declared the winner. Frank Hayes was buried a few days later dressed in his colorful racing silks.

'Sweet Kiss' never raced again. She was known ever after as 'Sweet Kiss of Death'.
9. The 1994 San Marino Grand Prix was marred by the deaths of two drivers. Rookie Roland Ratzenberger died when his car hit a wall during practice. The next day, while leading the race, a 3-time Formula 1 champion died when his car hit a wall at 233 km/h. Who was this Brazilian driver whose death is still mourned in auto racing circles?

Answer: Ayrton Senna

Even before his death Senna was considered one of the all time greats of F1 racing. When his helmet was removed after the accident it was found that Senna had placed a folded Austrian flag inside it to honor Ratzenberger who died the day before. Senna died after being airlifted to a hospital.
10. In 2012 a German track and field official was killed while performing his duties. What caused his death?

Answer: A javelin thrown by a competitor

Dieter Strack was moving into position to mark the distance of a javelin thrown by a high school athlete when it struck him in the neck. He died the next day of a ruptured carotid artery. Cases of officials being struck by thrown objects are fairly common in track and field. A shot put judge died after being struck at an Ithaca College meet in 2014.

The javelin currently used in competition is about 1.5 meters in length, weighs 800 grams and has a steel tip.
