Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. All great professional athletes are known for some quirky antics, notably around the team dressing room. What weird habit do most of Lafleur's teammates remember him for?

Answer: Being dressed and ready hours before a game

Several years after having retired from playing professional hockey, during the 2003 NHL Heritage Classic outdoor alumni game against the Edmonton Oilers, Wayne Gretzky showed up a few hours before the game to great the media. He was astonished to find Lafleur fully dressed and ready to play.

The forecast was for -25C (-13F) outside in Edmonton that afternoon. Only a true lover of the game would be eager to play outside on a day like that.
2. Prior to his professional hockey career, Lafleur broke many junior scoring records. How many goals did he score during the 1970-71 season in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League?

Answer: 130

Guy Lafleur scored an impressive 130 goals for the Quebec City Remparts in 1970-71. Since 1977-78, the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League awards it's most valuable player with the Guy Lafleur Trophy.
3. Which NHL team drafted Guy Lafleur first overall in 1971?

Answer: Montreal Canadiens

The Montreal Canadiens pulled off a series of shrewd last minute trades during the 1970-71 offseason to be able to get the first round pick. Oddly enough, even with a record setting 130-goal season and leading his team junior team to the Memorial Cup championship, then Montreal Canadiens General Manager, Sam Pollock, said that he hesitated to draft Lafleur number one, as the other choice he was considering was no slouch either in Marcel Dionne.
4. Which accomplishment did Guy Lafleur not achieve as a result of his accomplishments as a professional athlete?

Answer: Win the NHLRookie of the Year Award (Calder Trophy)

Cracking the lineup of the Montreal Canadiens was very difficult to say the least and Lafleur received limited ice time with the Habs and mustered a respectable 64 points in his first season. However, it was his teammate Ken Dryden, the team's goaltender, who won the NHL's Calder Trophy that season, becoming the first player in NHL history to have won the Stanley Cup and the playoff MVP Award before winning rookie of the year honours.
5. A 50-goal season is the benchmark by which a true goal scorer is measured in the NHL. How many 50-goal seasons did Guy Lafleur have during his career?

Answer: 6

Guy Lafleur scored at least 50 goals in six seasons from 1974-75 to 1979-80. During that run, Lafleur became the player in the NHL to score 50 goals and 100 points in six consecutive seasons. Lafleur also became the fastest player to reach 1000 points, doing it in only 720 games.

At that time there was no trophy awarded to regular season leading goal scorer. If there had been, Lafleur would have won it four times.
6. While with the Habs, Guy Lafleur was part of five Stanley Cup winning seasons, including a four in a row run from 1975-76 to 1979-80. How many times was he voted the playoff most valuable player.

Answer: 1

It's a testament to the great team on which he played that he won the Conne Smythe trophy only once, in 1977. During the 1977 playoffs, Lafleur scored 9 goals and 17 assists for a total of 26 points. He would likely have scored more, however the Canadiens only lost two playoff games that year on their route to the cup.

He also tied for the league lead in playoff scoring, with 21 and 23 points respectively, in 1978 and 1979, but was not voted the playoff MVP, losing out to fellow teammates Larry Robinson and Bob Gainey.
7. How many times was Guy Lafleur voted the regular season Most Valuable Player Award in the NHL?

Answer: 2

Guy Lafleur won the league MVP, Hart Memorial trophy in both 1977 and 1978. Lafleur also led the league in scoring, setting a franchise record for points scored in a regular season with 136 in 1976-77, and tying the franchise record for goals scored in a regular season 60 in 1977-78.
8. How many regular season points did Lafleur score during his NHL career as a member of the Montreal Canadiens?

Answer: 1246

Guy Lafleur's number 10 jersey was retired on February 16, 1985, by the Montreal Canadiens. He retired as the all-time leading scorer of the most decorated professional hockey franchise in sports history with 1246 point in 961 regular season games. He was inducted into the NHL Hall of Fame in 1988, following the minimum three-year waiting period on the first ballot.
9. Missing the game he so loved and feeling he still had something left to give, Lafleur came out of retirement to play three more NHL seasons from 1988-89 to 1990-91. Which general manager convinced Lafleur he could still could do it?

Answer: Phil Esposito

During the NHLs 1988 offseason, Lafleur astonished the hockey world by announcing that he was coming out of retirement to play for Esposito's New York Rangers. Realizing that he only had a few weeks to prepare for the season opener, he opted to follow the training regimen of a prize fighting boxer to get himself into shape.

He was even seen sparing with Sugar Ray Leonard on a few occasions while in training.
10. Lafleur played two more seasons for another NHL team before hanging up his skates for good in 1991. Which team did he play his last professional hockey game for?

Answer: Quebec Nordiques

Lafleur returned to Quebec City, where he had been a junior hockey phenom, and played two decent seasons in 1989-90 and 1990-91, scoring a total of 62 points in 98 games. Not bad, considering that he was past his prime and that the franchise was in a full rebuilding mode during that time and had its two worst seasons managing a meager 28 wins.
