Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The only team to ever defeat a Bill Russell-led Boston Celtics in an NBA Finals was _____________ ?

Answer: St. Louis Hawks

In the 1957-58 Finals, the Hawks took the Celts 4-2. Most would say that Russell's ankle injury in the third game had a huge bearing on the outcome. The Hawks, however, did have an awesome team then led by Bob Pettit...the same team that took Boston to 7 games before losing in the previous season.
2. Which of the following superstars NEVER was chosen as league MVP?

Answer: Elvin Hayes

The 'Big E' would help lead the Washington Bullets to the NBA title in '77-78, and his partner, Wesley Unseld, would be chosen MVP in the Finals. Bill Walton took the league MVP that year.
3. Wilt Chamberlain was selected the MVP and Rookie of the Year in 1959-60. Who is the next player to do that?

Answer: Wesley Unseld

Big, rugged Wesley Unseld turned the Baltimore Bullets around in 1968-69.
4. Technically speaking, who was not selected as the First player in an NBA Draft?

Answer: Kareem Abdul Jabbar

'Technically speaking,' Lew Alcindor was chosen first by the Milwaukee Bucks in 1969. He later changed his name and became the 'Kareem of the Crop!' Martin went to Portland in {'72;} Walker to Detroit in {'67;} and Benson to Milwaukee in '77.
5. Which of the following players was chosen AFTER the other three were taken in the NBA Draft?

Answer: Karl Malone

The Cleveland Cavaliers came up Big-Time Empty in the 1985 NBA Draft when, having already lost the 8th pick in a trade with Dallas (who took Schrempf with it), they traded the rights to Charles Oakley, number 9, to Chicago for the rights to Keith Lee, number 11. AND...still on the board were: Joe Dumars inumber 18, A.C. Green number 23, and Terry Porter number 24. I guess the Cavs were not the only team to miss out on some future all-stars. Oh, Malone went 13th!
6. Which of these NBA coaches was chosen with the higher draft pick in his particular draft?

Answer: Rudy Tomjanovich

Rudy 'T' went 2nd in 1970, Cowens 4th in '70, Wilkens 6th in '60, and Riley 7th in '67.
7. Who was NOT taken as the first choice in his particular draft?

Answer: Jerry West

'Zeke from Cabin Creek' followed the Big 'O' in the 1960 draft. 'Bells' Bellamy and 'the Hill' were chosen first by Chicago in '61 and '62 respectively.
8. The Chicago Packers became what 2008 NBA franchise?

Answer: Washington Wizards

The Chicago Packers begat the Chicago Zephyrs who begat the Baltimore Bullets who begat the Capitol Bullets who begat the Washington Bullets who are now the Wizards. Da Bulls and the Cavs are expansion teams, and the Golden St. Warriors are out of Philadelphia.
9. All of the following have played in NBA Championships, but who did not play on an NCAA championship team?

Answer: Oscar Robertson

The Big 'O' just missed in '58-59 and '59-60 as the California Golden Bears knocked him out in the semis both times. Hondo and Big Luke both won with Ohio State in '59-60 by taking out the Golden Bears. If you picked Michael, he hit the game-winner against Georgetown back in the 1980s.
10. Based on the number of NBA championship rings, who is the greatest of the following?

Answer: Sam Jones

Sam Jones was Boston's first choice in the 1957 draft, and he retired the same year as Bill Russell, so give him 10 rings. Everybody knows Michael has 6 which puts him ahead of Magic who has 5. But slip Hondo ahead of both of them as he won 6 with Russell and 2 with Cowens for a total of 8.
