In the WNBA's inaugural season in 1997, the Houston Comets were in the Eastern Conference along with the New York Liberty, the Charlotte Sting, and the Cleveland Rockers. The Los Angeles Sparks, Utah Starzz, Phoenix Mercury, and Sacramento Monarchs, made up the Western Conference. In 1998, when the league expanded, the Houston Comets were moved to the Western Conference.

At the time, confetti had already been coming down to celebrate what would have been Houston's third championship. Houston did go on to win the series in game 3.
