Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. As with all sports there is a governing body. What is the governing body of badminton?

Answer: Badminton World Federation

The Badminton World Federation (BWF) roots started with the International Badminton Federation (IBF). The IBF consisted of nine members and in 2006 the BWF was formed where it expanded to 176 countries worldwide.
2. The badminton championships are held every year, except on the fourth year. Why?

Answer: Summer Olympic Games

From 2006 the badminton championships are held on an annual basis except in a Summer Olympic Games year. In an Olympic year the Olympic Games become the championships for that year.
3. Badminton is played on a netted court. What equipment is required by a player?

Answer: Racquet and shuttlecock

Each player has a racquet consisting of a long handle and small oval stringed head used to strike the shuttlecock over the net. The shuttlecock has a round rubber base that has feathers embedded into it. The feathers cause drag that causes the shuttlecock to fly differently than a ball.
4. How many times can a player strike a shuttlecock before it flies over the net?

Answer: Once

Whether playing singles or doubles a player may only hit the shuttlecock once before it passes over the net. If the player on the other side retrieves the shuttlecock and returns it over the net, it is still in play. The other side then must hit it back, and so on. Play ends when the shuttlecock hits the floor.
5. Serving in badminton is different to tennis. What is the main difference?

Answer: Serve is hit underarm below the waist

The serve is performed by hitting the shuttlecock underarm over the net to the player positioned diagonally on the other side. The shuttlecock must not land on the court throughout the match. If it hits the floor that point is over with the side where it hits losing. If the serve does not go over the net or lands outside the marked court it is a fault and replayed.
6. What score has to be achieved in badminton to win the game?

Answer: 21

The point is over when the shuttlecock hits the floor or is out of bounds. A point is scored by the player who wins whether they are the server or not. A match is the best of three games.
7. A tie-breaker exists in badminton.

Answer: True

The game of badminton is played to 21 points by a lead of two points. Therefore, if the score is 20 all the game continues until one side has a two-point advantage up to 29 points. If a game becomes 29 all the next point won will be the winner.
8. What year in the nineties did badminton become an official sport at the summer Olympics?

Answer: 1992

Badminton was first introduced as an official sport at the Barcelona Summer Olympics in 1992. Badminton at the Olympics has restrictions on the number of players in each category being four participants only for any country.
9. A serve in badminton can be faster than a serve in tennis.

Answer: True

Whilst the serve in badminton is faster than tennis the rest of the game is not. The feathers of the shuttlecock cause a dragging effect that slows any rally down. The speed of a serve in badminton has been clocked at over 300 kph whereas tennis is still in the low 200s kph.
10. Badminton is a game of strategy. What strategies are used?

Answer: Strokes and deception

Badminton has numerous strokes of play, for example, serve, forehand and backhand, overhead and underarm, smash, spin, lob, drive and drop. Deception is used to deceive your opponent using speed or direction. For example, you could prepare your racquet for it to look like you are going to hit a drive whereas you do a drop shot instead.
