Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How old was Glen Boss when he first learned to ride?

Answer: 4 years old

Glen learned to ride when he, his mother, and 3 sisters moved to Gympie in Queensland. The man who taught him was a retired stockman, a friend of Glen's relatives. Glen learned to ride bareback on a Clydesdale.
2. What was the name of Glen's first horse?

Answer: Pride

Pride was a paint pony. He and Glen competed together at Gympie Pony Club. Ala Giant was the horse Glen rode for his first win (at the Gympie races). Sinbad was a hand-me-down horse from Glen's older sister, Samantha. Glen moved on to Sinbad after he had outgrown Pride. And Makybe Diva is the legendary mare who won 3 consecutive Melbourne Cups (2003-2005).
3. How old was Glen when he was introduced to horse racing?

Answer: 15

Glen was 15 when he was taken to the Gympie races. This is where he became hooked on racing.
4. Who introduced Glen to horse racing?

Answer: His grandmother

Glen was first introduced to racing at 15 years old by his grandmother, who needed some company one day when she went down to the Gympie races. From first sight, he was hooked on racing.
5. Finish this quote: "Forget it, mate, you're too bloody _______ ".

Answer: big

This quote was spoken by a senior jockey to Glen, when, on his return visit to the Gympie races, Glen was allowed into the jockey room. It had been said that Glen rode, and, ever since his first visit to the races, was thinking about becoming a jockey. This jockey took one look at Glen and told him to forget it, because he was too big.
6. Which horse did Glen ride to his first Group 1 victory?

Answer: Telesto

Glen rode Telesto to his first Group 1 victory in 1994, in the Chipping Norton Stakes at Warwick Farm. When the gates flew open, Telesto didn't move, and by the time he did, the other horses were six lengths in front. At the half mile, Telesto had caught up to the rest of the field, and at the 600 metre mark (600m to the finish), Telesto galloped past the rest of the field.

His amazing sprint carried them all the way to the post.
7. When did Glen and his partner, Sloane Gavin, move to Sydney from Queensland?

Answer: 1993

Glen and Sloane moved to Sydney in the winter of 1993 when Glen copped a serious careless riding charge, banned for a total of 29 race meetings. It was his first ride for Lee Freedman, on the filly Bint Marscay, in the Doomben 10,000.
8. How did Glen break his neck in 2002?

Answer: He fell off when racing

Glen broke his neck in 2002 while riding in a race in Macau. It was a wet surface, slippery saddle and plastics, which jockeys wore over their silks when it rained.
9. Glen broke his neck in 2002, how long did it take him to recover?

Answer: 4 months

When Glen was first taken to the hospital, he was told he hadn't broken his neck at all. But then another doctor came and took over, telling Glen they were sending him in for a CAT scan. The CAT scan revealed that Glen had broken his neck in 2 places, and was told that he had to lie on his back, stock still, for 6 months while it healed. Glen then got in contact with Dr Julian Chang (in Hong Kong), who put Glen in a halo brace.

This allowed Glen to sit up, stand, walk, and even go home to Australia.

After 4 months, he was back riding track work.
10. What are the names of Glen's children?

Answer: Tayte and Carter

Tayte was born in 1995, and Carter was born in 2000. Samantha, Kelly, Tina, Bob, and Leanne are all Glen's siblings. Mattie and Charlie are family friends, who were flower girls at Glen and Sloane's wedding in 2004.
