Answer: 8

It was first thought that Montana would miss the rest of the season, and it was also thought that his career was over. But Montana shocked everyone by coming back to play 8 weeks later. The 49ers won the NFC West with a 10-5-1 record. They lost to the Giants again in the first round of the playoffs 49-3. Montana would be knocked out cold in this game by Giants nose guard Jim Burt and would not get up for a while.

In a strange twist of fate, Burt would later become a teammate of Montana's. Burt would play for the 49ers from 1989 to 1991.

Answer: 22

The record would be stretched out over 2 games. After finishing with 5 straight completions in a game against the Cleveland Browns, he had 17 straight completions against Green Bay. On top of that he also had the NFL's top quarterback rating and threw a career high 31 touchdown passes.

The 49ers would lose in the first round of the playoffs to the Minnesota Vikings, which came as a shock because they were favored by many to make it to the Super Bowl.
10. 1988 was a strange year for the 49ers. That season saw Steve Young get more snaps in training camp. It also saw Young start a few games in Montana's place. What did the media call this 49er soap opera?

Answer: The Quarterback Controversy

It all started at a preseason game in London UK between the 49ers and the Miami Dolphins. A reporter interviewed Bill Walsh and Don Shula before the game and asked, each of them, if they had any concerns entering the 1988 season. Shula didn't say anything important, but when it was Walsh's turn to speak he replied: "We might have a quarterback controversy." In the first game of the 1988 season Montana led the 49ers to a 34-33 victory over the New Orleans Saints but injured his elbow in the process.

The next week Walsh started Steve Young against the New York Giants. Young didn't play very well, and he was replaced by Montana who led the 49ers to victory by throwing a 78 yard touchdown pass to Jerry Rice. Montana would return as the starter for the next 6 games but would suffer some minor injuries and Walsh decided to rest him for the stretch run.

He would start the final 4 games and win 3.
11. When Joe Montana threw the winning touchdown to John Taylor in Super Bowl XXIII, how much time was left on the clock?

Answer: 34 seconds

The win would be the 3rd Super Bowl win for the 49ers in 8 years. It would also mark the end of Bill Walsh's 10 years as coach of the 49ers.
12. Joe Montana once threw 4 touchdowns in a single quarter?

Answer: True

It happened in a game with the Philadelphia Eagles in 1989. The 49ers were down 21-3 at one point, and Montana was sacked 8 times in the game. But he threw 4 touchdowns in the 4th quarter to lead the 49ers to a 38-28 victory. For the game Montana threw for 425 yards and 5 touchdowns. Throughout his career Joe was famous for his 4th quarter comeback victories.
13. The 49ers finished 14-2 in 1989, and stormed through the playoffs to Super Bowl XXIV where they faced the Denver Broncos. The 49ers destroyed the Broncos 55-10. How many touchdowns did he throw in that game?

Answer: 5

At the time this was a Super Bowl record. It would be broken by Steve Young when he threw 6 touchdowns 5 years later in Super Bowl XXIX. Joe would be named Super Bowl MVP for the 3rd time.
14. On October 14, 1990, Joe had a real big day throwing for 476 yards and 6 touchdowns. What team did Joe and the 49ers destroy that day?

Answer: Atlanta Falcons

Joe would lead the 49ers to the best record in the NFL at 14-2 in 1990. That means that over a 2 year span in 1989 and 1990, the 49ers had a win-loss record of 28-4. The 49ers quest for a 3rd straight Super Bowl championship fell short, as they lost the NFC Championship game to the New York Giants 15-13.
15. In training camp in 1991, Joe would feel something pop in his right elbow as he was throwing. His elbow would need surgery and he would miss all of the 1991 season. Steve Young would take over and lead the 49ers to a 10-6 record but they would miss the playoffs for the first time since 1982. It was first thought that Joe would be ready for the start of the 1992 season but his elbow was not fully healed. He returned for the last game of the 1992 season on Monday Night Football. What team did the 49ers play that night?

Answer: Detroit Lions

Steve Young would start this game and play the 1st half. Then he would watch from the bench as Montana came out for the 2nd half to play his first game in almost 2 years. He would play very well completing 15 of 21 passes and throwing 2 touchdowns. The 49ers would win 24-6.

After the season, Montana was traded to the Kansas City Chiefs. He would play 2 more years before retiring after the 1994 season. He was elected to the Pro Football Hall Of Fame in 2000.
