Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What life event caused Jordan's jump from the NBA to baseball?

Answer: His father's murder

Jordan and his Chicago Bulls team mates had just won their third straight NBA Championship in 1994, he was on top of the world.

Then it all came crashing down, during the off season his father was murdered.

Jordan and his father, James, were very close. Both had wanted to see Michael play professional baseball.

After his father's death Michael went into grieving and signed a minor league baseball contract.
2. The same man who owned the Chicago Bulls also owned the Chicago White Sox, the team that signed Jordan to his baseball career. Who was the man that managed to keep MJ?

Answer: Jerry Reinsdorf

Pippen was a longtime Bulls team mate, and Jackson was the team coach.

Reinsdorf owned both the Bulls and White Sox in 1994. He allowed Jordan to trade his sneakers for a pair of cleats to continue his athletic career.

Jordan stayed in the Reinsdorf family and eventually worked his way back onto the hardwood.
3. Prior to spring training, Jordan filmed his first TV commercial as a baseball player. Which film director starred in the ad spot with him?

Answer: Spike Lee

Spike Lee was a infamous New York Knicks fan, and hence loved to heckle Jordan when he played in New York.

The two squared off in several commercials with Lee playing a character named Mars Blackmon.

When Jordan switched to baseball it made sense to keep the commercial series going, and just switch from basketball to baseball for the heckling.

The commercials were for Nike Air Jordan sneakers.
4. What was the name of the stadium where the Birmingham Barons played?

Answer: Hoover Met Stadium

Hoover Met Stadium had a record crowd for Jordan's first game with the Double-A Birmingham Barons.

More than 3,300 fans packed into the stadium for the first ever sell out. The Barons played to capacity, or near capacity crowds the entire season, something very rare for minor league teams.
5. What position did Jordan play on opening day for the Barons?

Answer: Right Field

Jordan was the everyday rightfielder for the Barons in 1994. He played the majority of the team's games at that position on the season.

His manager that year was future World Series champion Terry Francona.
6. What did Michael Jordan do in his first official at bat as a professional player?

Answer: pop out

Jordan hit a weak pop fly into shallow center field in his first at bat in the minor leagues.

He finished his first game 0 for 3.
7. Jordan hadn't played competitive baseball since High School before he became a 31 year-old rookie. What position did he play in high school?

Answer: pitcher

Not only had it been more than 12 years since Jordan had played competitively, he was playing an entirely new position in 1994 when he debuted for the Barons.

He started the season out slowly, but by the end of the year many experts thought he was playing well enough to earn a potential call up. The 1994 Major League Baseball strike ended that possibility.

Jordan had been a player representative in the NBA, and refused to cross the picket line had he been asked.
8. On what date did Jordan hit his first home run?

Answer: July 30, 1994

Among the options, only July 30 was during the minor league baseball season that Jordan played.

He ended the season with three long balls.

The stadium announcer simply yelled "This ball is gone" when Jordan connected on his first dinger.
9. How many game winning RBI did Jordan have with the Barons?

Answer: 7

Jordan ended the season with the Barons with just 51 total RBI, but seven were game winners.

Considering the team posted a 65-74 record, that was a decent number of game winning hits.

Jordan played in 121 games with the team.
10. After his season with the Barons was over Jordan went on to play in the Arizona Fall league.

Answer: True

The Arizona Fall league had some of the top prospects from each of the 30 MLB teams.

It was considered the best of the best among prospects.

While played in the league Jordan hit a respectable .252. Playing in the regular season that year he had only hit .202.

Scouts attributed the difference to his hard work and how much better he was playing late in the year.

Instead of continuing his baseball career though, Jordan chose to return to the NBA, where he won three more championships, made three more all-star teams, a league MVP award and three more scoring championships. He played a total of five more seasons, which included a second retirement and second return to the league.
